John Brown's Body is an epic American poem written by Stephen Vincent Benet. Its title references the radical abolitionist John Brown, who raided Harpers Ferry in Virginia in the fall of 1859. A forgotten poet

I first read John Brown's Body, the book length poem chronicling the Civil War in high school in the forties. It was my first exposure to narrative poetry and it has been my favorite book since then. When I read twenty years later that it was also the favorite book of John F. Kennedy it reassured me that he would avoid war at all costs. It is an anti-war story, and the devastation of war, the profiles of the all too human generals and of Lincoln are an important footnote of history. The poetry is musical and sometimes stark. He is able to impart the real devastation of war on the lives of those affected by it. I would reccommend it to anyone who loves poetry and history. It is a truly American story of a war that should never have been fought.

This today Is a Masterful work of art by one of Americas foremost poets, It almost is forgotten by todays history professors and teachers but remains to be a historical account of the Civil War. In the 1950's it was read by hollywood actors Tyrone Power Raymond Massey and a host of others on a Broadway stage.
I have tried in vein to locate it on CD if anyone knows if any exist, please contact me.
Also I love this version, highly recommend for students of history, or Civil War Buffs, would almost believe Martha Mitchell's "GONE WITH THE WIND" Could have been influenced by this, as sit was originally published in the 1920's as a poem.

Old friend

Was very pleased to find a copy of text. I saw the performance years ago as a young man and have wanted my own copy and a way to suggest to others that it would be perfect for today's culture.
