I definitely recommend this to anyone building a house

Just in my first few glances through the book, I learned a ton about passive heating and cooling - lots of stuff I hadn't even considered after having already read a bit about the subject. I definitely recommend this to anyone building a house. Even if you already have an existing house, there are things you can do.

Subtitle Misleading - This Book is about Passive Solar Heating

A more accurate title / subtitle would be: The Passive Solar House: The Complete Guide to Heating Your Home. I say this because there is only a page and a half out of 224 pages given to cooling (that is pages 110-111). I realized that I may have purchased the wrong book when I read in the Preface the following:

"The knowledge imparted in this book has been accumulated from over 30 years of data gathered from several hundred solar homes located in the northern tier of the United States, from North Carolina to and including Canada and west to the mountain states. These are locations that are primarily focused on heating."

I live near the gulf coast, and was interested in learning about passive means to cool my home, in addition to heating. (As I write this just after midnight, at the end of November, my Air Conditioner is necessarily on!) This is probably a 4 to 5 star book for those living in the cooler regions of the country, and I do not intend to discourage those living in such areas from reading this book. And, if I move to a cooler region after retiring, I will probably pull this book out and review it.

Good book. Detailed calculations are helpful. Drawings are helpful, but in the Kindle version is difficult to read. Best to buy the hardcopy, as there appears to be no way to get the software on the CD via download. It's worth the $1.25 difference in price.

Great history and commentary

Lawson has created a wonderful, readable historical account. The first 30 chapters each present one typeface ('font' for computer folk). A typeface's chapter analyzes the structural features of the sorts ('glyphs'), noting how the typeface fits into the usual bins labelled 'black letter', or 'modern', etc. That discussion tends to be spotty, though, and the successful reader already knows a few different ways for serifs to differ from each other, for line weight to vary, and lots more.

What this book does well is present specimens of different typefaces within each family, showing how the letterforms drifted through time, or how they evolved to meet specific demands of paper, ink, and press. The typefaces are arranged in a chronological order, of sorts, but one type face's era may overlap another a large margin. Within each chapter, Lawson explores the development of that typeface, from the calligraphy and earlier letterforms that preceded it up through its contemporary appearance and use. The many examples also show the relationships between members of the same evolutionary tree. A few times, though, the samples could have been bigger, e.g. for pointing out differences in bracketing of the serifs.

This is very much a history of the type designers, printers, and other people in the history of type. It also gives some history of printing and typefounding technology. That motivates discussions of typefaces that were created to solve specific problems of paper, ink, and press, as well as esthetics. Historical information about punchcutting technology and modern type creation tools also explains the changing business relationships between font designers, distributors, and users.

Knowledge of history may help the reader in speccing type appropriate to some printing task, but there's very little here that would help in setting up a page of text. It's a book for another purpose, though. It's about the typefaces that are (or should be, or should not be) important to today's typographers, and why.

A EDUCATION IN TYPOGRAPHY

This collection of essays about type and the people who design it is, I think, essential reading for those who care about typography. It may seem a dry subject from the outside, but selecting the right type for a job, and using it in the most effective way possible, is as important to the printed word as color is to design.

As a collection of pieces written over a number of years for Printing Impressions, a trade magazine, it is not a systematic treatment of the subject. However, there are some fascinating stories here as well as useful, practical facts for those who work with type or simply want to understand it.

Petroleum Geoscience - Gluyas & Swarbrick

This is one of the newest books on petroleum geosciences. It is a bit too advanced for beginners; consequently, I would not use it as a stand-alone text for an upper-level undergraduate course in petroleum geology, especially for students with diverse academic backgrounds. I would use it as a complementary text because it covers up-to-date material not in other books on the subject, most of which are years - if not decades - older than this one. This book also includes material on geophysics and especially on borehole logging, including the newer types of devices and the logs they produce. The authors are professionals and know what they're doing. This is a good reference with material not in Selley, North, or Levorsen.

Crown and Coleman, journalists with Crain's Chicago Business, report how Schwinn, America's premier manufacturer of bicycles, developed, flourished, coasted, and finally flew from its seat headfirst into bankruptcy in 1992. The company's heyday was in the 1950s, when its lovingly crafted, chrome-bedecked monsters were a kid's dream. But the company ignored a shift that occurred in the 1970s--kids of the '50s, by then young adults, had taken to cycling, a sport that demanded lighter frames. When management finally realized the trend, they discovered that Schwinn's underfinanced, antiquated Chicago plant could not produce the welding on the new, thinner tube frames, forcing them to outsource the work to Taiwan's Giant Bicycles. Giant was then tiny, but--thanks to Schwinn--it soon fulfilled the promise of its name to become the biggest bicycle manufacturer in the world. A salutary tale of "no hands" management.

This involving saga of the rise and fall of an American icon, the Schwinn Bicycle Company, combines a colorful social history of bicycling with a cautionary tale on the many forces that can bring down a family-run enterprise. Founded in 1895 in Chicago by headstrong German immigrant Ignaz Schwinn, the firm saw its market eclipsed by the automobile age, until Schwinn's son Frank led the bicycle industry out of the Depression with diverse styles and a youth-oriented image. Business boomed in the 1950s, but imported bikes splintered the market, and third- and fourth-generation Schwinns, clinging to old formulas, fell behind. The closing of the Chicago factory in 1983, a Pyrrhic victory over the union, left Schwinn essentially an importer. Parts shortages and lack of investment in new equipment were further burdens. Crown and Coleman, reporter and deputy managing editor, respectively, at Crain's Chicago Business, maintain that Ed Schwinn Jr., who became president in 1979, soured key relationships with dealers, employees and suppliers through his arrogance, managerial blunders and a series of joint ventures that sapped the company's limited resources. After filing for bankruptcy in 1992, Schwinn Bicycle was bought by Chicago investors Sam Zell and David Schulte, who moved the streamlined enterprise to Boulder, Colo. Photos. Author tour.

Since its founding in 1895 by German immigrant Ignaz Schwinn and later ownership by his descendants, the company produced such sought-after bicycles as the Black Phantom, Sting Ray, Varsity, and Excelsior. In 1992, Schwinn filed for bankruptcy and was subsequently taken over by an outsider. Interesting business history

This is a fascinating cautionary tale about what happens to a business -- no matter how famous -- when it loses focus on its customers and competitors. For anyone who grew up riding a Schwinn, it's hard to avoid rooting for the company to succeed, even though one knows (in advance) that in the end the company failed. It's a little like watching a horror movie where you want to yell out to the screen, "watch out," in the vain hope the actors in the movie can here you -- I kept wanting the management of Schwinn to wake up and save the company, even though you know they won't.

Highly recommended -- too bad this is out of print. Worth buying a used copy to read.

It's a Bike Book, It's a Business Book. Outstanding.

Never take a job at a privately owned company with the grandkids running the place.

If you are a grandkid who owns a company, got to Hawaii and live on the beach and hire a real professional manager for your company.

The book has a lot of Schwinn history. It tells us what went right and what didn't. The Schwinn at Walmart may say Schwinn, but it isn't a real Schwinn, it's a low bid bike sold by a company that owns several bike names. Like the title, "No Hands" all of the chapters have similar titles, makes it fun. Also serious facts and why the great company wasn't great. Having ridden Schwinns of that era and bought one and still have a Japanese bike of that era, I can't figure out why it took so long for them to fail. They just got out of touch with their customers, yet were set up to be in tune with the every changing market.

Read this book years ago and missed it so much i had to have my own copy. Great book that makes you almost smell the hard wood floors of the old Chicago Schwinn factory. Its that good.

BEST FOR BEGINNERS!

Absolutely loved this book. Was on the net searching around for a TOOL to help me with my song writing. After wading through about a ton of misses that really didn't do much for me, I happened to glance upon this book. Wow, how perfectly it fit for my situation. Although I love to write I was a bit rusty and this book found a way to bring the good song writer out of me. Recommend this title to anyone looking to write their first song.
