About the Author
Richard K. Smith received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He is the author of The Airships Akron and Macon: Flying Aircraft Carriers of the United States Navy, the award-winning First Across! The U.S. Navy’s Transatlantic Flight of 1919 and numerous articles on the history of aeronautics. He died before completing the manuscript of Five Down, No Glory.

USS Akron and USS Macon were a fascinating experiment in long-range reconissance. Massive rigid airships, equipped to launch and recover scout planes. Smith's history is very extensive, covering the entire program from the efforts to establish an American rigid airshp design and construction capability (courtesy of the importation of a design team from the Luftshiffbau Zeppelin), through operations and the development of the capability to launch and recover aircraft reliably, to the loss of both airships. He's even got an appendix on the Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in LTA or interwar Naval Aviation.

eccellent book!

Eccellent book. It captures the atmosphere of those wanky times and the pionering with airships. Also, the writer has done some good research into the why and what if's about the whole political structure (as well as financial) into the failure of both ships and the situation off the LTA craft in general. The book is well writen and is easy for novices too the subject.

It focuses on the quality of democracy and the legitimacy of policy making in multilevel regional systems.

The volume offers a much-needed clarification of confusing concepts such as legitimacy, democracy and 'civil society' in non-national political systems. It critically assesses the quality of democracy and legitimacy within different Regional International Organizations (RIOs); it examines how networks of non-state actors become a kind of transnational civil society and assesses their potential for solving legitimacy deficits; and it investigates the impact of democratic conditionality in different RIOs.

The contributors deepen our understanding of a relatively new non-state actor on the international scene - the regional international organization - and investigate the potential contribution of transnational non-state actors to the quality of governance at the regional level.

A great way to re-energize your martial arts!

Forget the review which focused on typographical errors in the text. This is a "reality based" guide to self defense and the use of the wooden dummy as a training tool. Chris reminded me of the ugly opponents that we may face on the streets and describes the attitudes that we must adopt if we are to survive a real encounter with them. That is enough for me. Forget the lame Kata practice without working out realistic applications of the techniques. Forget the hours of air punching and kicking into imaginary opponents. After reading this book from cover to cover, I'm going out to buy my first wooden dummy and get busy! 4th degree Black Belt (Karate)

Felt like I was being personally trained

I got "Beyond" for my kindle and the more I went into the book the more I felt as if the author was right in the room with me. He is real, expressive, and brings the wooden dummy art to life for me. I think if you love martial arts you will enjoy his wisdom.
