Sarah Orne Jewett was an American novelist, short story writer and poet, best known for her local color works set along or near the southern seacoast of Maine. Jewett is recognized as an important practitioner of American literary regionalism.
Jewett's family had been residents of New England for many generations, and Sarah Orne Jewett was born in South Berwick, Maine. Her father was a doctor, and Jewett often accompanied him on his rounds, becoming acquainted with the sights and sounds of her native land and its people. As treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that developed in early childhood, Jewett was sent on frequent walks and through them also developed a love of nature. In later life, Jewett often visited Boston, where she was acquainted with many of the most influential literary figures of her day; but she always returned to South Berwick, small seaports near which were the inspiration for the towns of "Deephaven" and "Dunnet Landing" in her stories.

Evocative word-pictures of people, places & things past

Jewett is, perhaps, best-known for writing "local color" stories that are long on description and short on plot. That is to say, her slice-of-life stories don't necessarily seem to go anywhere or reach "pat" conclusions; they do not provide O. Henry-style "twists" as do many other storytellers of her era. Because of this, some modern readers may not fully understand or appreciate her works, and they may dismiss them as "boring." Admittedly, they may not be "exciting," but they weren't meant to be. Rather, she deliberately and expertly uses words the way other artists might use paint or photographs to vividly capture people, places, and times now vanished from the American scene. Her literary sketches (usually of Maine) are highly polished little gems that are well worth reading. They do not generate breathtaking suspense, but they do cause us to fully visualize the setting in our mind's eye and gently anticipate what people and places we will meet around the next bend or over the next hill.
"Country of the Pointed Firs," her best-known work (included here) is typical. Various evocatively descriptive episodes seem like the lengthy prelude to a terrific novel -- but one that never materializes. It would be comparable to Harper Lee, after beautifully introducing her setting and characters, abruptly ending "To Kill a Mockingbird" prior to any hint of the trial (the core of her novel) and subsequent events. And yet, the depiction of Jewett's people in THEIR very distinctive locale is only slightly less magical in its own right -- despite not leading to something that might have potentially been far grander. We must ultimately be content to appreciate such beauty where and as we are able to find it.
It is very handy to have so much Jewett in one place and for so low a price in such a handsome ebook. That convenience is essentially what one is paying for, since everything in this bundle is available for free as public domain editions in the Kindle Store (which is how I originally obtained them). Some of her works were written for children, and I am not as fond of them (though had I read them first AS a child, I might now feel differently toward them), but I do consider her adult tales to be quite special. However you may choose to obtain Jewett's works, whether in this bundle or as public domain freebies, if you approach them with the proper mindset, you will not only enjoy them, but will forever treasure them as you would an heirloom, family photograph album.
