Lovingly Informative

My wife and I are taking care of my 88 year old mother.
It has been very challenging though, we wouldn't have it any other way.
This book not only gives you loving advice and guidance, but it gives you
resources on specifically where to go for help and it shares the experiences of other
caregivers. Two thumbs up for the writers of this book.

"The Inspired Caregiver" is written in an honest and candid way, with lots of good quotes and tips for success and survival in caring for another person while living with a sense of sacred joy in life. Written in a "Pay it Forward" sincere manner, Peggi and Tia have created a gentle connection between the life lessons they have learned, and a personal lifeline for those caregivers who perhaps are isolated and in need of an understanding guide that can only come from someone who has "been there". This is a little jewel of a book.

I loved reading this book! I have been in a position of caregiving for many years and wish I would have had this back at the beginning. There are so many gold nuggets scattered throughout that pop into my mind as situations in my real life. Peggi and Tia reminded me that caregiving does not have to diminish the joy of living my life, it adds to it! Thank you so much!

Great read

My adoptive mother was assigned this book by the social worker that did their home study. Why a social worker would assign a book about the civil rights movement in America to a couple adopting a child from S. Korea is beyond me! Evidently it is an indicator of their ineptitude along with my miserable childhood with abusive AP's. However, I did enjoy the book and my education since I do align myself with the WASP mentality.

Excellent book!

I have long known of the atrocities that occurred in the U.S. During the Civil Rights Movement. This book, told by a white woman who lived through it, gave me new insights and a different perspective on the subject. There was so much I did not know. I often feel overwhelmed by the issues of race and diversity; Lois Stalvey showed me that one person can make a difference. I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding book!

This is the best book about race I have ever read written by a white person. Stalvey's memoir of her personal relationships with black people during the 1960's when our country was finally beginning to come to terms with its deep-seated racism is both inspiring and enlightening. Not only does she discuss race, she delves into other kinds of prejudice and how important it is for each of us to examine where our prejudices come from if we are ever to move beyond them. I recommend this book to anyone who doesn't think we have a race problem in this country, for even though decades have passed since its initial publication, we still have a long way to go to resolve the schism racism has cut into our national psyche.

It is difficult to asses a piece of scientific literature when terms are not specifically defined initially.
What is addiction, especially alcoholism?
If it is a disease then what are the core symptoms and are they helped?
Are the studies well controlled and peer reviewed or falsified?
More questions could be asked but a person should get the drift.

I recommend the book for anyone wanting a better understanding of addiction but leary of presentations that perpetuate outdated ideas. And good to see articles on nicotine, especially the one on how teenagers can get addicted so easily and quickly. I would refer anyone looking for a reason to quit smoking - or a reason not to start - to the article "Hooked from the First Cigarette."
While clearly written and very readable, there were a number of minor formatting problems (spaces in the middle of words; missing hyphens; missing words) in my Kindle text that I didn't expect from Scientific American. Also, in the introduction, heroin- the drug - is spelled: heroine. Does anyone proofread these days?

C is 38 years old, but it is still useful - for learning straight "structured" programming before tackling object-oriented programming, and in its own right for tasks for which it is best suited. This rigorous manual puts you in the real big boys' tough play yard. It covers the latest accepted standard, C99 (1999). Much easier to use as a development environment than the old C++ Turbo (DOS), (C++ Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) also run C), is Dev-C++ (Windows) from bloodshed.net - just hit F9 and you've compiled, assembled & run. The only problem: on my used copy of the manual, the publisher wouldn't allow me to access the code-file downloads (1-time redemption only), and wouldn't reply to my e-mail request for a new download key.

hedges: beauty, habitat and use

this book is written for england so yanks will have to adapt the species to their area, especially if you live in the north, but it is worth every cent because it provides so much knowledge about the techniques of hedge laying and hedge management. hedges offer such a diversity of benefits to farmers and backyard gardeners such as windbreaks, habitat for beneficials, diversifying the farm with micro niche products, etc. if you are not a farmer a hedge is a great way to add beauty and habitat to your yard for song birds, small mammals, etc. this book should be MUCH more popular in america.

Good for the modern industrial farmer in England.

Well written overview of the history, species and maintenance associated with hedges in England. It also touches on the English laws pertaining to hedges. The only critique I have is that it assumes the use of tractors or other heavy machinery, and does not really discuss the historical methods at all. If you are not in England and don't plan to use machinery to plant and trim your hedges, this book is less helpful than it could have been. Otherwise excellent.

The victory was long-sought and sweet, and the pages of this book vividly let the reader live the struggle and the victory. And while the abolition eventually became as impermanent as the nation's presence on the moon, these dedicated attorneys certainly made a difference. This is their story. As Evan Mandery writes in his new Foreword, "In these pages, Meltsner lays bare every aspect of his and his colleagues’ thinking. You will read how they handicapped their chances, which arguments they thought would work (you may be surprised), and what they thought of the Supreme Court justices who would decide the crucial cases. Hired by Thurgood Marshall as only the second white lawyer on the staff of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Meltsner litigated cases throughout the country and in many causes before teaching law at Columbia, Harvard, and Northeastern Universities.
