Can video art be catalogued? Yes, it can. Gloriously.

Although my collection is rather small, I am a big fan of art catalogues.

A short time ago, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine concerning video art catalogues. He was saying there was no point in making art catalogues for something that is in motion and has to be experienced live, and that they were as subjective as movie reviews.

"Bas Jan Ader: Please Don't Live Me" proves him wrong somehow. This catalogue, edited by the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, is incredibly complete and objective. It includes not only the listing and images of videos and installations, but also the documenta (sketches, photographs, bulletins, invitations, correspondence, etc.) that made them possible. As a plus, it also contains the very early works of Bas Jan back in the days when he was just beginning his studies in America (paintings and sculptures that were very influenced by CoBrA) and the ones he was working on during his MA studies (paintings, as well as very surreal illustrated books). The descriptions of the works (specially the films) are so detailed you can almost imagine you're watching everything. Obviously, this can never be compared to the experience of actually seeing them projected somewhere.

For well-known reasons, Bas Jan has been seen from a biased, romantic point of view, as a tragic hero. The essays in this book, au contraire, are deep and impartial. They tell you his pros and cons. They tell you about his pedantic behaviour as a youngster. About his love for ladies and investment on natural resources (usually, losing). But also about his family's story of struggle during World War II, his father's death and his mother's book about it. Experiences that were tremendous influences for most of his work, along with his admiration towards artists such as Piet Mondrian and Yves Klein (the reason why he would always dress in International Klein Blue). Another essay, by J�rg Heiser, also denies the portrayal of Bas Jan as a tragic hero, as he compares his slapstick humour to that of Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton's movies. He makes an exception to this comparison in a couple of projects (the melodramatic "I'm Too Sad to Tell You" and the lethally ambitious "In Search of the Miraculous") that are not exactly to laugh about.

As an extra point, I shall comment that the book's design, both inside and outside, is so utterly beautiful that the cover image you see here makes it no justice at all. Neither would sharing an image from the pages inside.

Good Book, Terrible Binding

I wish to start off by stating that the binding of this book is terrible. I had to purchase this book for a class and myself, as well as numerous colleagues, experienced the pages being removed from the spine of the book. I'm stating this as a precautionary tale since I was pretty unhappy buying this book new only to experience broken binding in multiple areas of the book within weeks of the purchase. If this book is a necessity, I would simply advise replacing the spine of the book or possibly removing the cover altogether, using a hole punch, and placing the pages into a 3-ring binder. Otherwise, you will continuously be annoyed at the book tearing at the seams. About the text itself, I appreciated the thorough detailing of the concepts, wide variety of forensic related topics, and informative mini history lessons. There were a few minor errors in chemical structure or vocabulary usage, but not enough to subtract from the overall appeal of the book since mistakes can be found in almost all books. Forensic Chemistry can be used as a great resource for both budding chemistry students and more esteemed scientists due to the excellent reference listing at the end of each chapter, as well as generalized and specific chemistry related information. If you can get past the binding issue, the book is fairly entertaining and enlightening.

Excellent manual!

I may be biased because Dr. Bell works in my department, but I've never personally had her as a professor. The book is excellent and offers a very detailed look at forensic chemistry. It covers a wide range of forensic chem topics from drug analysis to arson investigation. My favorite part is the numerous sidebars which include case studies or nuances that really help you to appreciate how useful the information in the text can be. I would recommend this text to anyone from a beginner to a professor.

Good tips - not much for the writing style

In the introduction itself this book doesn’t fail to tell you that options trading are very risky. Rather than making it seem like a god-sent gateway to financial freedom, you will be aware that it’s got just as much risk before deciding whether you want to proceed or not.

This book is a place to begin, to learn about how options trading are done. Although, throughout this book, I felt the writer was trying to attain some sort of sophistication in the writing by including elaborate words and all, which didn’t really match or explain the sentence. E.g. “haloed realm of options trading.” That sounds really cheesy and doesn’t really make sense relative to its subject (at least to me it is). I reread the same thing a few times over to get the idea he was trying to convey. The good thing is, omitting the attempt at sophistication; the book has some really good pointers and ideas to work out. So kudos for that!

Great guide for someone who is just beginning their option trading experience

This book is intended for beginning investors interested in learning about the ins and outs of options trading. No prior knowledge is assumed. The book provides a general overview of options, explains how they function, how they can be traded, when they should be traded, and their advantages and disadvantages. Author also explained the variety of option styles and a brief look at some of the many strategies that can be used to trade options successfully.
By the end of this guide, you should have a good basic knowledge of what stock options are and how to use them.

This was a nice introduction to OpenCV

This was a nice introduction to OpenCV, but be aware that it's only 56 pages. I especially liked the steganography examples. Also, the way the code is explained line-by-line was nice. The title of this book delivers exactly what's promised. It will get you out of the starting blocks when working with OpenCV. The version I read had an error or two in the source code, and the coding design and style isn't the best, but it works. I don't consider myself an expert in C++, but with a little help from StackOverflow, I was able to compile all the examples.

Instant Stopper

This book was useless for me. Why don't I read reviews before I purchase computer books!

Other reviewers did not try the installation directions for windows. I did.

Some of the links do not exist.
Many of the downloads are land mines - got to be real careful or you will install a bunch crap you did not want. I was not careful and one of the downloads created a new home page for me and installed two useless programs.

After lots of hours I don't have a useable OpenCV program writing capability. Some of the OpenCV paths that are to be used just don't exist in the version of OpenCV that I downloaded. Don't see anywhere I could have got them. OpenCV downloads don't seem to currently contain some of the stuff they may have in the past, so good luck with that part of the install.

Should have lit a match to a 10 dollar bill rather than buy this book. Would have been more fun and much faster. The book has killed my interest in writing a simple OpenCV program.

Disappointing Book.

This is a very small book that does not attempt to do much. The book consists of how to install OpenCV on Linux or Windows and then has 5 code snippets which illustrate basic functionality. If you don't think that is enough for you -- look elsewhere.

My issue with the book is that the linux installation instructions are incorrect, and the part of them that works is obviously stolen from a blog:

I don't know if the Windows part of the book is correct, but the linux information is a joke and the authors should be ashamed. I spend hours trying to figure out why their example code didn't build. Turns out the command they said would build the code is fundamentally incorrect.

About the Author

The Dawn of Dynamic Programming
Richard E. Bellman (1920–1984) is best known for the invention of dynamic programming in the 1950s. During his amazingly prolific career, based primarily at The University of Southern California, he published 39 books (several of which were reprinted by Dover, including Dynamic Programming, 42809-5, 2003) and 619 papers. Despite battling the crippling effects of a brain injury, he still published 100 papers during the last eleven years of his life. He was a frequent informal advisor to Dover during the 1960s and 1970s.

Professor Bellman was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1979 "for contributions to decision processes and control system theory, particularly the creation and application of dynamic programming." The IEEE citation continued: "Richard Bellman is a towering figure among the contributors to modern control theory and systems analysis. His invention of dynamic programming marked the beginning of a new era in the analysis and optimization of large-scale systems and opened a way for the application of sophisticated computer-oriented techniques in a wide variety of problem areas ranging from the design of guidance systems for space vehicles to pest control and network optimization."

The book is just a classic piece of historical. It is probably not the best book on optimal control available, because of large progress since this seminal work was published, but anyone interested in optimal control should definitely consider spending that little money, just to have it.

It's a classic book on Dynamic Programming by its own creator, Richard Bellman. The mathematical models are always supported by good examples. However, the mathematical formalism is hold and quite different from what someone can find in the more modern references.
