Loved the story

I fell onto this book on Facebook. I never heard of the author or series. I do love a good shifter book, especially wolves, and it was on sale so I thought.. Why not.
I'm really glad I did because I loved it. The first paragraph about Candace being carried off by Kellan and his 2 friends really got me. I was drawn in to see what they would do with her. I could hardly put my Kindle down.
I have to go back to book 1&2 and see the beginning of this series. I started on #3 but immediately bought the first two books.
I need to see why Candace's father basically threw her at Kellan. I'm missing some facts.
All 3 friends were going to mate with Candace but when the time came only Kellan did. They were true mates. Not to say Brett and Dane lost out... You'll have up read to find out what happens...

This is supposed to be a MC but nothing happened in this book other than a trip to Sturgis, so I'm not sure how that fits in yet.
Also all packs are supposed to go to Sturgis but Candace's father's pack doesn't go. I'm not sure why.
There is a great set up for book 4 which is releasing soon and I'll be buying it too. I definitely recommend this book. The storyline is great, the characters are well thought out and it's addicting.

Now for what I didn't like. The grammar & spelling are atrocious. Words are missing altogether, words are misspelled, and I'm not talking a couple. I'm talking DOZENS. It was very distracting to have to go back and reread because a sentence didn't make sense.
I believe if you are going to take the time to outline, write and pour yourself into a book the last thing you MUST do it edit. Even if you have a friend proofread for you, it HAS to be done.
This would have been a 5 star book if there were not so many careless mistakes.

INTRODUCTION
WHY WINE MATTERS

During the ten years it took to write the first edition of The Wine Bible and the four years it took to write this second edition, I have often asked myself why wine matters. What is it about wine that I hold so deeply? What is this endless attachment?

I have always known what it is not. It’s not about scoring or competitive analysis, though like any wine pro, I’m game for the next blind tasting. And it’s not about the need to retell what I have learned, though I can lie awake for hours thinking about how to capture a wine in words.

Perhaps it is this: I love wine because it is one of the last true things. In a world digitized to distraction, a world where you can’t get out of your pajamas without your cell phone, wine remains utterly primary. Unrushed. The silent music of nature. For eight thousand years, vines clutching the earth have thrust themselves upward toward the sun and given us juicy berries, and ultimately wine. In every sip taken in the present, we drink in the past—the moment in time when those berries were picked; a moment gone but recaptured—and so vivid that our bond with nature is welded deep.

Wine matters because of this ineluctable connection. Wine and food cradle us in our own communal humanity. Anthropologically, they are the pleasures that carried life forward and sustained us through the sometimes dark days of our own evolution.

Drinking wine then—as small as that action can seem—is both grounding and transformative. It reminds us of other things that matter, too: love, friendship, generosity.

The Wine Bible has taken me a long time to write—in some ways I’ve spent the better part of my last twenty years on it. It has taken this long not because it takes a long time to accumulate the facts, but because it takes a long time to feel a place—culturally, historically, aesthetically.

And so, on my mission to understand the wine regions of the world, I’ve danced the tango (awkwardly) with Argentinian men to try to understand malbec; drunk amarone while eating horsemeat (a tradition) in the Veneto; sipped wine from hairy goatskin bags in northern Greece (much as the ancients would have); and been strapped into a contraption that lowers pickers down into perilously steep German vineyards (an experience that momentarily convinces you your life is over).

I’ve shared wine and cigars with bullfighters in Rioja; ridden through the vineyards of Texas on horseback; eaten octopus and drunk assyrtiko with Greek fishermen in Santorini (considered by some to be the lost Atlantis); and picked tiny oyster shells from among the fossilized sea creatures that make up the moonscape soils of Chablis.

I’ve waltzed among wine barrels with winemakers in Vienna; stomped grapes with Portuguese picking crews until my legs were purple, and worked for weeks with a Mexican harvest crew in California, one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

These encounters brought wine so vividly into my life that I ultimately moved to Napa Valley on the sheer belief that living near vines would touch my heart in ways imaginable and not.

And so it has.

What is the superlative of amazing?

I bought the first edition of this incredible tome in 2015. As an ardent winelover for the past fifty years, I fully appreciate the dedication and passion that went into writing it. But MacNeil didn't just write it, she submitted the chapters to literally dozens of experts in their specialty for review. That is how it took TEN years to write!
How good was it? Good enough to take a two pound book with me to the Basque Country of Spain!
I own more than a dozen wine books, most of which gather dust on my bookshelf...not that one, it is a constant companion!
Imagine, a book that took TEN years to write, TEN years ago, and is still valuable. Wait, isn't that a bible?
If you read the Amazon reviews of it, you will find only two complaints: when will she write a new edition, and the weight. Oh, one more: why nothing on Temecula wines?
Finally, ten years and 4,000 pages of manuscript later, we got our wish...and more, because of all the changes, THE most valuable is the Kindle edition! Portable, quick and easy to search, and dozens of other new features.
As a wine advocate and aficionado who is a blogger and is working on a book project on wine, or more accurately the passion of the people who make them, this is a huge help to me.
I have been asked what wines I would take if I was going to a deserted island. I cannot narrow the list down, but as for what wine book I would take, this is it!
Oh, and even Temecula gets mentioned, as well as upcoming regions like Slovenia!

A thorough update from the last edition.

The Wine Bible is positioned between Dummies guide and reference books such as Sotheby's Wine EncyclopediaSotheby's Wine Encyclopedia. The book is packed with useful wine knowledge and their colourful history. Important wine terms and facts were highlighted in boxes. Introduction to local food and their pairings were also included in most famous wine regions.

The latest update reflected today's wine market. As wine drinkers become more adventurous, the Wine Bible offered handy introduction to new wine producing regions such as Slovenia, Georgia (not exactly a new region), and even Asian countries.

The Wine Bible was good in describing different wine styles but it did not recommend enough actual wine brands to try.

Yeah! It is finally here!

I'd been looking forward to this new edition of the Wine Bible and it did not disappoint. Great updates and expansive new information. It sits on my coffee table, convenient for quick reads when time permits. That is the beauty of the book. I work in the retail wine industry and this book is necessary. I also recommend it to my regular customers who want to increase their wine knowledge because of the approachable style of the content. Good job, Karen!

Through an intensive examination of photographs and engravings from European, Peruvian, and U.S. archives, Deborah Poole explores the role visual images and technologies have played in shaping modern understandings of race. Vision, Race, and Modernity traces the subtle shifts that occurred in European and South American depictions of Andean Indians from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, and explains how these shifts led to the modern concept of "racial difference." While Andean peoples were always thought of as different by their European describers, it was not until the early nineteenth century that European artists and scientists became interested in developing a unique visual and typological language for describing their physical features. Poole suggests that this "scientific" or "biological" discourse of race cannot be understood outside a modern visual economy. Although the book specifically documents the depictions of Andean peoples, Poole's findings apply to the entire colonized world of the nineteenth century.

Poole presents a wide range of images from operas, scientific expeditions, nationalist projects, and picturesque artists that both effectively elucidate her argument and contribute to an impressive history of photography. Vision, Race, and Modernity is a fascinating attempt to study the changing terrain of racial theory as part of a broader reorganization of vision in European society and culture.

Well really...

What do you expect when you're warned not to look for character development, plot, or romance? Not to be harsh though, I thoroughly enjoyed reading "My First Time." It was short, nasty, and something that I would probably never read more than once; although I have looked into other offerings from Allex K. Bell since reading this one. How much you enjoy this will all depend on personal preference and the mindset that you have going into it. It is extremely porny, not to mention unrealistic, but I don't expect something profound in everything I read. Sometimes I just want to read about extremely graphic, nasty, creative sex without the clutter of plot, or having to suffer though stilted dialog. Occasionally, I just want them to get on with it. Who knows? If you're not the highhorse erotica type, you just might enjoy it.

World Class Analysis of WWII Tanks

I've been a fan of Steven Zaloga since I first started collecting books back in 1983. I have come to respect his writing and opinion. Armored Champion may be his best yet. It is a superb book for beginners since it addresses so many of the considerations needed when discussing tank vs tank combat. Firepower, protection, mobility, reliability, cost. This is not new, but how this information is presented is top notch as are the printing, paper and illustrations.

Zaloga breaks it down by nation and by time period. He further breaks down analysis by what a tank crew would choose (expensive tank, world beaters) vs what a battlefield commander might choose vs what a nation would choose. Sometimes, those decisions are different and Zaloga outlines why. He supports his decisions with excellent tables, charts, clear B&W photographs and narrative. His choices are sometimes controversial, something he welcomes to promote discussion and differing views. The bibliography and appendix are detailed, helpful and come from many sources, foreign and domestic.

For the more experienced reader, there are still many insights, details and facts to be gathered, the summaries of each nations tank development alone make this a worthwhile purchase. This is not a color photo walk around, it is a highly informative treatise on tank development

The reader's digest view of this book – buy it, it's an excellent collection to the library.

Not quite up to Zaloga's best writing...but still worth it

Overall, this is a well-researched, enjoyable read. It offers a far more nuanced view of armored warfare then many comparable works on WWII tanks. Zaloga has his usual excellent research and mixes it with informed opinion as well. Perhaps the best parts of the book are various tables and descriptions of studies that I’ve never seen published before, either online or in print. These are sure to provoke spirited debate and discussion. For example, an extensive study by the Russians ultimately rated a Panther Tank as 2.37, with a T-34-85 1.32 with a late model Panzer III rated as the baseline of 1 (Higher is “better”, in this case). Or did you know that a British study gave the Panzer IV a rating of 1.0 rated a 75mm Sherman as a 1.1 (In this case, that means 1.1 75mm Sherman’s to match 1 Panzer IV.), a Cromwell a 1.35 and a 17pdr Sherman a .9 at 1000 yards? Fascinating stuff.

He also adds some new wrinkles to some old debates. For example, he examines the mechanical availability for major types of tanks, but critically he points out that this is not static, the most reliable tank during one part of the war, may not show up so well later on (Although it usually still holds some advantage). For example, the superiority, reliability wise, of the Stug III over all three primary German tanks, (PzIV, Panther and Tiger I) in 1943 is so great that the question is not what tank the German’s should have been making, but why bother making anything other than Stug’s at all. The comparison in 1944 is much closer. Its also noteworthy that the abysmal early reliability of the Panther, while very bad, is at least at times not dramatically worse then the Tiger I (For example PzIV availability in late 1943 was 48%, Panther was 37%, Tiger I was 36%. Yes, that is bad, but they are all pretty bad, which surprised me.)

Which leads to a few complaints. I would appreciate some better context for some of this data. For example, He mentions a British study regarding the IS-2, T-34-85 and Comet. Zaloga cites his source, (Assessment of Forms of Anti-Tank Defense, Effectiveness of British and Russian Tanks. AORG Report No. 11/51 August 1951.) The study concludes the IS-2 is slightly better then the Comet, which is slightly better the the T-34-85, not exactly controversial, but there are no details how its conclusions were derived. I’m confident the actual study is likely as interesting to read as a primer on federal tax law, but part of the reason I enjoy Zaloga’ s writing is that he does give informed opinion. In this case, since the Comet and IS-2 never faced each other, presumably this assessment would come from an analysis of mobility, firepower, protection, accuracy, effectiveness of the fighting compartment etc. Did it include crew survivability? Mechanical reliability and durability? Were they assessing an actual IS-2 Tank etc.? I don’t know, and I would have liked to hear more what he thought about the subject. Since this comparison is similar to what he is doing in this book, it would have been good to get his assessments on the conclusions made.

Likewise, very useful tables are included throughout the book. Readers should be aware that these tables need to be read with the accompanying text. For example when discussing 3rd Army US losses during the Lorraine battles of Sept 1944, at location 3422 of the kindle edition, a table summarizes total US AFV losses as 148, but it only includes tanks, not the M10 and M18 GMC’s. However the accompanying text mentions that total losses for September were 200, including TDs. It also important to look carefully, some of the tables have some formatting issues. For example, a table detailing total German AFV losses in Lorraine for Sept 1944 lists a total of 341 total losses. It also lists US claims, but the formatting is off, it shows US claims as 186 under Panther, 421 under PzKpfw III and 607 under PzKpfw IV, with no claims at all for assault guns/JagPz etc. Obviously the 607 is the total number of claims (186+421), the 186 and 421 might represent claims for Tanks vs Assault guns, or for that matter claims by US tank crews vs US tank destroyers etc., or destroyed vs damaged, but it’s not clear. As the other reviewers have noted, some of the tables are a bit sloppy.

I need to mention that Zaloga thankfully makes it clear when he is dealing with claims versus actual losses, a very helpful detail that is pretty much a prerequisite for any honest assessment of WWII combat vehicles.

Other parts of the book appear rushed. For example the Stug is given a decent amount of coverage, as well as the way it was integrated into the German army, but there is barely a mention of US tank destroyers, which made anywhere from 10% to 20% of US armor strength.

And finally there is really no conclusion, Zaloga reviews the tanks for each period from 1941-1945, but really does not have a concluding chapter where he reviews all the information presented and offers his overall assessment. I understand that a major point of the book is that there was no single best tank of the war, but I’m looking for more of a review of all the information supplied. Again, part of the value of a author like Zaloga is that his opinion is valuable, and I would have like to have heard more of it.

Now that I'm reviewing what I've said, this sounds unduly harsh. Basically the only real issue with the book is that parts of it seemed rushed, the conclusion is really abbreviated, and some of the tables and formatting are sloppy. Critically, this is not a ~$10-15 Osprey book, at the list price of ~$30 I tend to expect a little more of these details to be ironed out. But ultimately I’d say this book, while required reading for AFV fans, is not as good as the superlative Armored Thunderbolt. I gave Thunderbolt 5 stars, so this gets 4.

An in-depth and thoroughly researched study that showed what went into a "top tank"

The concept of identifying the best couple of tanks for each year and campaign of the Second World War, in the author’s capable hands, goes beyond the usual tank-buff arguments and wargamers’ focusing on the importance of those numbers to which they happen to have access. By setting out what are the criteria for combat success in the rapidly changing operational environment that marked the Second World War, the book is an excellent description of what makes a tank effective or a failure, always considered with its larger context in mind.
Solidly researched, the book draws on a broad array of archival and published sources, so much so that it is a valuable first stop for anyone interested in the subject. One hopes the author goes on to do similar overviews – not limited to 1939-45 – first, of the development of tank fire control and armament and, second, of tank battle tactics that can similarly draw on his deep knowledge of the subject.

Wonderful book on regional Spanish cuisine

I thoroughly enjoyed the TV series because of the exploration of regions of the country heretofore underrepresented, some very enticing recipes and Mr. Stein's affable personality. This companion book so far has not disappointed. Though I've only cooked a few of the recipes, they were relatively easy to prepare, utilizing just a few ingredients and perhaps 1 or 2 pans at most. Most came out perfectly. Unfortunately, one dish, the garlic chicken, was a complete failure. Mr. Stein does not tell you to remove the garlic/oil marinade and as a result the garlic burned whilst browning the chicken. As someone who considers himself a pretty decent cook, I should have known better, and in fairness the book is probably geared towards someone like me who is already knowledgeable and comfortable in the kitchen. However a bit more detail in the directions would have been welcome and averted a mess. One other criticism is that the recipes are all in metric, but it's only a minor inconvenience to convert to English measurements. Overall, I found it beautifully written and designed and I am very much looking forward to trying more recipes from this really good book. Bravo, Rick Stein.

I love Rick Steins cookery books but was a little disappointed ...

I love Rick Steins cookery books but was a little disappointed with his Spanish book,perhaps he didn't have as much to work with.Have found a few recipes that I will try, but nothing like his India book which I look at most days. Perhaps it will grow on me !!
