Do not purchase this book if you want to learn about the philosophy of race

"The Philosophy of Race" by Albert Atkin fails to adhere to its back cover's promise of presenting the discourse on race in a balanced manner. The sole reference to proponents of the biological legitimacy of race (which is evinced by volumes of genetic, morphological, and psychological data, as the latest relevant reviews will attest to) is a passing remark about "The Bell Curve", though its thesis is weakly challenged by Atkin. If you want to understand the perspective of race from the view of those with white guilt and a fidelity to multiculturalism and integration, this is your book; if you want a look at more than one side of the philosophy of race, this book does a horrible job; it contributes just about nothing new to the discussion, solely regurgitating feel-good, faltering sociological theories.

Bought because of the 5-star rating

I was expecting a condensed 7-Habits or some nuggets of wisdom/shortcuts for being more effective at work/life. But several of the articles were commonsensical advice, for example (I paraphrase) "prioritize your work/family/friends", "don't neglect your physical/emotional energy", "live healthier and be more organized to combat attention deficiency".

Only three of the articles, including Christensen's, were personally entertaining and useful reads, out of the eleven total articles.

If you find your energy lacking at work, or you can't properly prioritize your work/personal life, then this should be helpful to you.

Good read but sometimes incoherent with the central message

This book has some wonderful articles that anyone can learn from. Personally I have taken to reading a few articles more than once e.g. "How will you measure your life by Clayton M. Christensen" and have gained some key insights I think I want to apply to my own life. On the other hand, some other articles talk more about the role of leadership which I do not think necessary or they use examples which aren't relevant to the central topic of self-management but rather people-management. These articles are oft cliche and may fail to appeal to a wide range of people who I think may be reading this book e.g. non-CEO's et cetera.

About the Author
Katharine Hodgkin lectures in the School of Cultural and Innovation Studies, University of East London. Her research centres on questions of autobiography, memory and madness, particularly in the early modern period. She has published several articles on these topics, including most recently 'The Labyrinth and the Pit' (History Workshop Journal 51 2001), a study of madness in seventeenth-century autobiography.

The aliens get their due in this fun background book for Warhammer 40,000.

A huge percentage of Warhammer 40,000 (aka 40K) background material focuses on The Space Marines as they are still the most popular miniature range for the tabletop game, but the aliens get their due at least a little bit in this fun background book for the popular science fantasy game. Fans of a particular alien race may be disappointed at the short amount of material devoted to their favorite "xenos," but the positive side to this is that nearly all of the aliens from 40K get some attention in this book; it's an alien autopsy smorgasbord! Please note that this book review assumes some knowledge of Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 game universe, so if you're reading this review and feeling lost, please check out Games Workshop's website for more information at games-workshop dot com.

The premise of the book is that it is a report based on the lab contents and notes of a "heretical" Imperial inquisitor. The report was supposedly made by an inquisitor sent to shut down the lab and document the contents before destroying them. The contents of each page are designed to look like a hodgepodge of notes made in haste about each specimen and document found in the lab. This includes notes on alien physiology and behavior with anatomical diagrams and more. There are even a few lesser known alien creatures documented in the book, though most material is devoted to well-known alien species like Orks, Tau, Eldar and Tyranids.

At the time of this writing Amazon is selling this book at a huge 37% discount off the list price and I definitely think this book has enough fun background in it to be worth buying at such a bargain price, although the list price is a little steep for what is here. In fact, I've only rated this book with 3 stars because of the steep list price, which I feel is a bit excessive. In short, buy this book here at Amazon at a nice discount if you enjoy these background books even a little bit, but don't bother with it at the full list price unless you enjoy these types of books enough that you feel you absolutely must have it.

Xenology: Chock full of background and a fun read to boot

Xenology is not the most visually stunning art book to come out of the black library, but it does have loads of background that should intrigue any 40K fan, and an amusing framing story with a surprise twist at the end! The data is presented in the form of an "Inquisitorial Analysis", with dissection notes, eyewitness reports, heretical texts secured from Inquisitorial vaults, and first hand observations.

Several mysteries unfold as the reader progresses though the findings, told from the viewpoint of an ill-fated Inquisitor and a reluctant Genetor Scientist. It reads like a murder mystery, with a horrifying ending that goes well outside the scope of the characters involved.

There are several new aliens described (Umbra), in depth information on races only alluded to before (Hrud), and comprehensive summaries verifying information on races already well developed (including insight into the roles and motivations of all four types of Eldar). Most importantly, connections are drawn between each case study that point to the role the Slaan and C'tan play in the fate of all the races of the galaxy, as first suggested in Codex: Necrons. In fact, this is an excellent companion book to the Necron codex for those hungry for more background information on all the races of the 40K universe.

To sum up, the value of this book comes from the amusing presentation of a wealth of xenos information, and the black tale that unfolds as the reader explores its contents. The art should be considered a bonus. Enjoy contents of this book while you can, for the Inquisition will not be far behind...

Rebeccasreads highly recommends XENOLOGY as an extraordinary background book for WARHAMMER 40,000 devotees complete with awe-inspiring artwork, macabre notations & nightmarish images which are bound to give the lads some lovely frissons of spooky fear!

A superbly detailed, mesmerizing catalog of aliens, their anatomy & visions of galaxies, which, incidentally, includes a bit of a mystery.

As Harvard University professor Richard Pipes shows in Communism: A Brief History, the tragedy of Communism is that its history was anything but brief. For most of the 20th century, it held much of the globe in its fatal grip: The utopian ideology is responsible for nearly 100 million deaths, which is 50 percent more than the number of people killed in the two world wars combined. "Communism was not a good idea that went wrong; it was a bad idea," writes Pipes, who is also the author of The Russian Revolution and Property and Freedom.

This compelling little book is a devastating critique of Marxism, Leninism, Stalinism, and everything else that fits under the awful rubric of Communism. It begins by tracing Communism's philosophical origins (it has antecedents in Plato) and then outlines the writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Next comes the story of why Communism took root in Russia and not the industrial West, where Marx himself believed it would sprout (answer: the traditions of property rights and the rule of law were too strong). Even in Russia, Communism was not the product of popular demand (in fact, it has never been the product of popular demand anywhere). Instead, it was a top-down revolution imposed on the whole country by a small minority of elites, led by Lenin. The Communists claimed to represent workers, but few workers were actually a part of their movement. Thus, "the Communists had to rule despotically and violently; they could never afford to relax their authority." And they were capable of incredible cruelty: "The so-called purges of the 1930s were a terror campaign that in indiscriminate ferocity and number of victims had no parallel in world history." In 1937 and 1938, for instance, the Soviet rulers of Russia executed an average of 1,000 people per day; the tsarist regime they supplanted, which was often criticized as inhumane, executed less than 4,000 people for political crimes over an 85-year period.

Though Pipes appropriately spends much time discussing the Soviet Union, he also examines Communism's reception in the West and in developing countries. The book is a concise tour de force. As the cold war fades into history, it is critical not to forget the monstrous legacy of Communism, whose horrible record Pipes lays out on these pages. This is a magnificent book, a wonderful primer on a topic whose importance is difficult to overstate. --John Miller

This opinionated introduction to communism would be better subtitled "requiem for a misguided ideology." Pipes (The Russian Revolution) focuses much of the book on his own field of specialty the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. The Harvard historian is at his best here, providing a thorough account of the ascendancy of the Russian party in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in accessible and at times eloquent prose: "Soviet totalitarianism thus grew out of Marxist seeds planted on the soil of tsarist patrimonialism." Part of the Modern Library's series on world history, the book details Soviet atrocities, emphasizing how Communist agricultural policies not only suppressed human rights but led to famines that killed millions of Soviet citizens. The sections on communism in other countries are much shorter and not as strong, particularly the discussion of Chile, in which Pipes fails to address the involvement of the United States in the 1973 coup that overthrew Socialist leader Salvador Allende. Throughout this volume, Pipes, a longtime Cold Warrior who served as Reagan's National Security Council adviser on Soviet and East European affairs, is on a mission to prove that communism's egalitarian impulses run contrary to human nature. Whether or not they agree with Pipes's views, students and general readers alike will benefit from this concise, insightful work. Pipes brings to this short study unsurpassed credentials as a historian of 19th- and 20th-century Russia. His Russia Under the Old Regime (LJ 3/15/75. o.p.) offered, at much greater length than here, his views on the Bolshevik Revolution and the ensuing course of Soviet history. For him it is a tale of unremitting failure and tragedy, even more apocalyptic than that told in Martin Malia's The Soviet Tragedy (1994). Here he sketches out a background to the idea of communism, then outlines its application in Russia by Lenin, Stalin, and their heirs and its reception in the West and the Third World. Pipes is relentless. Communist leaders are ruthless or psychotic killers (in Pol Pot's case, fair enough), starry-eyed idealists, or corrupt and cynical party hacks. Castro is little better than a pimp for Cuban women. A final section, "Looking Back," emphasizes the human and psychological cost to Russia and the world of this illusion. As a brief, polemical diatribe by one of its fiercest Western critics and historians, this short account of communism should provoke and instruct. For general and academic libraries. Simply excellent

I first read this fantastic little book back in 2003 and it never left my side throughout 4 years of university. That's my way of putting a disclaimer in that my review may be a little biased.

Over 161 pages Pipes charts the rise and fall of Communism from the very first intellectual musings by Plato and Aristole all the way through to John Locke and of course Karl Marx and Lennin. Pipes argues coherently and articulately coming to the conclusion that Communism failed not because of timing, or location, or implementation, but because the ideology of communism is fundamentally flawed. It wouldn't have mattered one jot if the time, place or manner of implementation changed (as the Neo-Marxist argue) because the ideology was so fundamentally anti-human that it would never have worked.

If you are interested in finding out how such a fundamentally flawed ideology could control the actions and reactions of the hundreds of millions of people and dictate the formation of the geo-political situation for 73 odd years then read this book - you won't regret it and it is quite simply a page turner that I found impossible to put down.

An amazing introduction to an important subject

Communism was an amazing development in world history. A system of ideas took control of intellectuals and revolutionaries across the world, but in unindustrialized nations communism was able to achieve power and wrecked horrible suffering on those unlucky enough to be born within its grasp.
Richard Pipes does an excellent service by providing the reader with a concise history of Communism. Call it a 'Cliff Notes' if you will, yet it is brief and easy to follow.
Pipes spilts his book into three sections. The first details the history of communism from Marx to its rise and domination in Russie. The second is the reaction to communism and its influence on intellectual life in other industrialized nations. Finally Pipes explores communisms influence in the third world with an excellent examination of China and how Mao's style of communism contrasted with the USSR (which was caught between hoping to encourage communism abroad but unwilling to see communists abroad who achieved power drift from control by Moscow...result tension and hostility between Russia, China etc.).
While Communism has died, it is important that we remember its errors for two reasons. The first is so we do not repeat them, obviously. The second is so that we know where the modern world came from as we start our way into a new century.

A Well-Deserved Obituary

In a succint 160 pages, Richard Pipes aptly lays down a history of Communism which is meant to serve both as an introduction to and an obituary for this "utopia" envisioned by Karl Marx and others.
The telling quotes and the refreshingly logical progression (from its starting point in the books of philosophers to the bloody ocean of victims it left behind) make this book arguably one of the best ever written on this grim subject. Although I cannot speak for everyone, the skill that Pipes displays while grounding his conclusions in the facts as well as his ability to pick the quotes that best exemplify each leader, make this the best that I personally have ever read on Communism--and thus my rating of five stars.
To be frank, if Communism does survive after this, the book will only prove its point--that Communism, in theory as well as in practice, has a reckless disregard for both the facts of reality and for human life.

Absolutely Delightful

I loved this when it was a Tumblr called "Fill the Silence." And now it's a fun book for your coffee table to help break the ice at dinner parties. Or for intellectually stimulating bathroom reading. The possibilities are endless!

The only thing that would make this book better are footnotes with citations for said trivia. But maybe that's just me.

Makes metal forming look like childsplay

My review is from the perspective of a rank beginner in forging and forming. The authors have succeeded in breaking down each technique one needs to master before moving on to pieces of increasing complexity. While there are metalsmithing books out there, this one is outstanding and I think fills a void. A few more inspirational examples would be nice, but overall the clarity of instruction is outstanding. Worth every penny.

A must for anticlastic raising

Having been TA ( teaching assisant) to Cynthia Eid this summer, I saw all of the tools, stakes and samples that are listed in the book. It is a great reference book if you have taken a raising workshop or learned to do anticlastic raising, so that you can refer back to the book on what you know or needed a refresher. Extra tips, how to modify tools, where to get them, all that is included, which a lot of books don't necessary offer. Even how to make your own stakes tips are included.

I still haven't received my Amazon copy yet, but was able to buy one directly from Cynthia ( we teach at the same school), so I was able to start reading and referring to it.

Definitely an addition to your jewelry/metalsmithing libary.

great book

Guilty with some of these mistakes. Very happy to stumble upon this book. It's a great reminder of things we already know and a great guide to parenting. An eye opener of what we miss and forget to focus on as parents with today's busy life, technology and life's demand. Our children learn from watching us (they watch more and learn from our action than our words) and they absorb what we do... So talk less specially when angry and do more out of LOVE for them. What opportunity we miss with all these gadgets, TVs and other distractions.

Great book! Easy read! Would recommend it to family and friends. Will read it again to remind myself of key points to focus in parenting.

Energy Use Optimization, Spearhead of Urban Competitiveness

Austin Troy explores the economic competitiveness of cities in the light of what he calls their urban energy metabolism, i.e., the different rates at which cities consume energy. The drivers of this urban energy metabolism are for example climate, access to water, the quality of buildings, industrial use, and transportation/urban development. Too many American cities are car-dependent, sprawling agglomerations. Think for example about Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles. In European and Asian cities, ownership of a car is far more a liability than an asset.

Mr. Troy rightly warns his audience against complacency. Energy prices are not guaranteed to remain low forever. The author calls for both improving energy efficiency and developing new clean energy generation capacity. Mr. Troy usually explores the pros and cons of the different energy sources with objectivity in what he calls "interlude." However, the author is clearly too pessimistic about nuclear power, by far the leading U.S. electricity source which does not emit greenhouse gases. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently approved the Westinghouse Advanced Passive 1000 nuclear power plant design and the construction and operating license for the two-reactor Plant Vogtle expansion in Georgia. Nonetheless, Mr. Troy rightly lambastes the incoherent U.S. policy for the management, reprocessing, and/or disposal of spent fuel from commercial nuclear reactors.

Mr. Troy looks at a wide variety of cities such as Bangkok, Copenhagen, Denver, Houston, London, New York, S�o Paulo, and Stockholm, to identify the best practices for improving a city's energy metabolism. The author comes to the conclusion that regionalism is at the heart of a coherent urban policy in the U.S. Local planning too often leads to urban inefficiencies among competing local jurisdictions, whose costs are born heavily by the U.S. federal government. Mr. Troy notes that contrary to popular perception, regionalism is not un-American. The U.S. federal government is already involved in many aspects of community building such as transportation and infrastructure funding, environmental protection, natural hazards protection, and housing policy. The author calls for a much more effective regionalism at the U.S. federal level. Think for example about a revised conceptualization and funding of federal transportation projects, locally relevant environmental policies, changes to sprawl-inducing federal housing finance and credit policies, and urban revitalization. However, U.S. local, county, regional, and state governments also have a key role to play in improving urban energy metabolism. Cities such as Baltimore, Denver, Los Angeles, and New York have taken steps to reduce their energy footprint in the names of quality of life, economic development, or energy efficiency.

In summary, Mr. Troy calls for changes to how cities operate in the name of energy efficiency before the eventual advent of significantly higher energy prices.

Very Hungry City Provides an Interesting, Insightful Overview of Energy Issues

Very Hungry City is an excellent account of the inter-relationship between urban areas and energy, and it explains the key issues that determine the energy usage of a city--its form, modes of transportation, infrastructure, climate, etc. In doing so, Very Hungry City provides an interesting (and entertaining) analysis of the potential effectiveness of many of the tools that are currently used (or proposed) to reduce urban energy consumption and to improve quality of life in cities. The author's analysis is clear and his conclusions are straightforward and thoughtful. The conclusions of Very Hungry City portray an energy picture that is more complicated and nuanced than typically found in the mainstream media. This characteristic of Very Hungry City sets it apart from much of the information (including other books) on environmental issues and makes it a valuable read for those interested in environmental issues and for the government officials and policymakers currently deciding how best to invest the tremendous amount of resources directed towards climate change, air pollution, urban congestion, etc.

This first edition is well structured, with interesting "interludes" on energy sources between chapters. Writing is usually engaging, sometimes list-y. Content is often compelling, sometimes questionable. Overall a worthwhile read, informative and thought provoking.
