There is an ill-concealed skeleton in the closet of physics: "As they are currently formulated, general relativity and quantum mechanics cannot both be right." Each is exceedingly accurate in its field: general relativity explains the behavior of the universe at large scales, while quantum mechanics describes the behavior of subatomic particles. Yet the theories collide horribly under extreme conditions such as black holes or times close to the big bang. Brian Greene, a specialist in quantum field theory, believes that the two pillars of physics can be reconciled in superstring theory, a theory of everything.
Superstring theory has been called "a part of 21st-century physics that fell by chance into the 20th century." In other words, it isn't all worked out yet. Despite the uncertainties--"string theorists work to find approximate solutions to approximate equations"--Greene gives a tour of string theory solid enough to satisfy the scientifically literate.

One of the more compelling scientific (cum-theological) questions in the Middle Ages was: "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" Today's version in cutting-edge science is, "How many strings... ?" As posited by s tring theory physics, strings are furiously vibrating loops of stuff. The concept of strings was devised to help scientists describe simultaneously both energy and matter. The frequency and resonance of strings' vibration, just like those of strings on an instrument, determine charge, spin and other familiar properties of energy?and eventually the structure of the universe: a true music of the spheres. There's a chance that strings are themselves made up of something still smaller. But scientists can prove their existence only on the blackboard and computer, because they are much too tiny?a hundred billion billion times smaller than the nucleus of an atom?to be observed experimentally. Brian Greene, professor of physics and mathematics at Cornell and Columbia universities, makes the terribly complex theory of strings accessible to all. He possesses a remarkable gift for using the everyday to illustrate what may be going on in dimensions beyond our feeble human perception. Very well written, and mostly worthwhile read.

A casual discussion on a very complex topic. I'm about 2/3 way done. I'll say this.. this books is as well written as can be for such an abstract topic. I'm writing this review before finishing the book since I'm afraid at my pace, by the time I'm done, the theories, and these are theories only, discussed may have changed. To a complete non-scientific person like myself, this book seems written in a foreign language, for a different species. One much smarter than me. But at a pace of 5 pages or so per reading session, I'm slowly digesting it. And so far it's a worthwhile read...or punishment as I some times feel.

Interesting but rather technical account of string theory and cosmology

This book is recommended for any reader who is interested in the application of string theory to cosmology.
The first few chapters cover special relativity, general relativity, and quantum mechanics. The author must be commended for his vivid account of the scientific exploration in these important areas over the past century. His remarkably clear explanation, in terms that a lay reader should be able to follow without difficulty, makes it fun to read.
Nevertheless, reading becomes rather more difficult as the author goes into string theory and its applications in cosmology. Even as an accomplished string theorist, it must be very difficult for the author to explain in lay terms a relatively new theory in physics that involves complex mathematics (in topology and other areas). And to try to explain the intricacies of the theory without actually going into the mathematics involved makes the task doubly difficult. A lay reader's difficulty with the detailed account may also reflect the state of play of string theory, which has yet to receive the thorough study given to relativity and quantum mechanics over the course of the past century.

An amazingly readable book

It takes some good visualization abilities on the part of the reader, but the author does manage to give good insight into some very complex topics without math. Background math and other technical details are in end notes for many topics if you want to delve that deep.
I was also pleased to see that it's not just a book on string theory. The author also gives a very good historical background on relativity and quantum mechanics as well as the competing theories for unifying the two.
