About the Author
David Shemmings is Professor of Social Work in the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of Kent. He undertook his PhD in attachment theory, and has spent most of his working life in the field of child protection. Yvonne Shemmings is a Continuing Professional Development Specialist and has trained professionals in over 30 child protection organizations. She is a qualified social worker and a senior manager, and her work includes the use of attachment theory in practice. Both David and Yvonne have published widely in the fields of child and adult attachment and child protection.

Carroll William Westfall is Professor of Art and Architectural History at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He holds degrees from the Universities of California and Manchester, and earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He has written extensively on Renaissance art and architecture and on Napoleonic city planning.

Excellent Resource & Beginner Guide

Mastering JavaServer Faces 2.2

Author Anghel Leonard really delivers it with this book. I'm new to JavaServer Faces and I found this book to be the comprehensive guide from front to back, covering everything required to get setup and running rather quickly. From states to custom events I found myself unable to put this book down, in fact I'd recommend picking up the "companion" to this book which I plan on ordering as well: JSF 2.0 Cookbook, Packt Publishing. Once you get this book down having a cookbook is really the next step to really drive home the learning experience.

My favorite part about this book was how it tied in AJAX and how it used events, something I love to do when thinking about how to handle data in an application is how will I work with it, keep track of it, and using events is how I typically deal with it. I was quite pleased with the coverage of AJAX in this book. Something very unique which I also enjoyed was the use of a queue to kinda throttle the requests hitting the server, often times I feel like too many requests are going to fire off at once. My test server is rather old now and get's a bit cranky when I throw lots of data at it. I've also been including factories in PHP setups for quick deployment so I was pleased to see JSF offers a similar type setup allowing me to utilize the portions I need and not worry about other underlying components.

I would have liked to seen more visual elements used in the book, while there are a few diagrams I like to see UML flow charts in use, and some visual elements to help reinforce the overall learning experience. I suppose the HeadFirst series spoiled my brain but I do like how they break up large chunks of text with visual elements. Near the end of the book I enjoyed building the Nadal site, however I would have liked to seen a more robust project using some of the techniques discussed in the earlier chapters. Despite my preferences I feel the book still deserves a 5/5 because it delivers on what it set out to achieve, and that's teach me the basics and medium to advanced JSF utilization's.

Definitive information source

This book has something for everyone. For beginners, it explains the very basics, plus it provides understanding how JSF is connected with other vital technologies. And it even goes the extra mile to give beginners some healthy tips in the beginning. For those who are already familiar with current or previous revisions of JavaServer Faces technology, this books offers exhaustive tour of what JSF can actually do. Latest topics, like using lambdas in EL, is also covered.

On the top of it, the language level of this book is very pleasant. When used as a reference guide, information can be found quite easily without getting lost in long paragraphs of useless text. Also, there are code samples to be found everywhere.

500 PAGES of BEAUTIFUL JSF CODE

To start off; I would have to say the biggest PLUS is that this book is error FREE. I have bought every JSF book on amazon and have found 90% of them riddled with incomplete backing beans or erroneous implementation of JSF tags. I will not take credit away from the other books; I have learned a good deal from them.

The author starts and finishes a subject with a complete and comprehensive piece of code; beginner or advanced ONE good thing is you will be able to run the code and best of all see a result. The book is geared towards all kinds of users; be you a beginner intermediate or advanced, but more so geared towards intermediate and advanced users. I have to say if you are a beginner which is the case with me; you will need to do more research on basic JSF material. You will not find beginners explanations of the JSF life cycle or what is are JSF UIComponent tags. But you will find a treasure cove of code on how manipulate and use JavaScript commands within your JSF pages.

Other advanced topics will show you how to embed images within an input frame box; or changing color of input box if you click your mouse in a text box. I'm currently half way through the book. I feel I have found the secret book that contains the secret code snippets that the advanced programmers out there are using.

Overall I find this book a great reference and worth reading twice or trice. Very pleased with my purchase.

An Interesting, Different Grammar

This book is not a traditional grammar. Instead it is a modern grammar that reflects advances in knowledge of English from linguistics. It offers a different way of looking at English grammar than that provided by traditional grammars. It provides lots of real world examples of sentences to illustrate grammar rules.

The book is a descriptive, not a prescriptive, grammar.

Although the book covers both British and American English grammar, its focus is heavily on British English grammar. A large majority of the examples are from British English.

This is a good book for people familiar with traditional grammar but who want to experience a different perspective on grammar. I found the book mind expanding. However, this is not the best book for those who want to improve their writing of American English.

The Kindle version is not good and the book is not fun to read.

Don't buy the kindle version. I made that mistake and now I am stuck with it. The kindle version has issues with lists, tables, and sidebars. It doesn't show the complete pages as in a physical book which distracts from reading the actual content and makes it feel fragmented.

The book has a lot of good new information but it is not readable: there is no flow. It is full of definitions, lists, etc. I recommend another advanced more readable book, "A Student's Introduction to English Grammar" by Huddleston and Pullmum. Even though it has student in the title but it is actually an advanced book based on the new Cambridge's Grammar by the same authors.

Grammar in Plain English!

English grammar is not easy, so if you need to learn grammar or just improve your reading/writing skills, you need a really good course or book. You need to examine a lot of different options to make a good choice, but not all of them include morphology (nor syntax) which is a basic, and today's different grammar theories make it more difficult and confusing. The Oxford Modern English Grammar doesn't miss any basics, it's easy to understand, and it clears any possible confusion as you read, so you can learn grammar without a teacher. I do recommend this book!

America Under Attack

I could tell by looking at the reviews (the typical rightward pointing U-shape of the review bars, either mostly 5 stars or 1 star) that this was a very polarizing book. Unfortunately, it is difficult to use many of the reviews in such a case to determine the merit of a book, since many probably did not read much of the book if at all. I can see why this is the case, since the book paints a negative view of Donald Trump. I try to keep my reviews unfettered by a predetermined bias.

That said, Nance discusses the DNC hack that began around March or April of 2016. Metadata left behind, led to WikiLeaks and a Russian intelligence organization which is a conglomeration of cyber spying groups codenamed Cyber Bears. It appears this organization consists of the FSB (former KGB), the GRU ( Russian Military intelligence), and criminal cyberwarfare subcontractors. The author then proceeds to give us a history of Russia and its intelligence organizations. He notes that “This deep history of espionage, intrigue, and murder shaped Vladimir Putin’s worldview toward the West.” To Putin, the ideal situation would be an economically crippled America, withdrawn from military adventure abroad and NATO, and a leadership installed that is friendly to Russia. In chapter five, the author discusses Russia’s new model of coordinating all aspects of intelligence, propaganda, and cyber operations, which he calls “hybrid warfare.” We learn about advanced persistent threats or APTs, which are “a description of malware toolkits used by hackers.” These hacker groups have been active in other countries as well, such as Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, and others. Nance formulates a connection from these cyber groups to WikiLeaks, calling WikiLeaks Russia’s intelligence laundromat. In the current election, neither Assange nor Putin curry any favor of Clinton making them perfect partners united against this candidate.

The timing of these events is obviously designed to bolster Trump in the polls. For example, we have the leaks prior to the Democratic National Convention which ended up pitting Bernie supporters against Hillary supporters; after Trump’s speech on immigration after the Mexico visit, DCCC documents from Pelosi’s computer on immigration and other items were released; within days of the NY Times stating that anything Trump said needed fact-checking, the Cyber Bears hacked the news organization; a similar thing occurred with Newsweek, and we could go on.

Nance concludes by saying that, “Russian use of cyber weapons to perform criminal acts and damage our electoral process was intended to remove faith in America itself.” He sees politics itself under attack due to hacking and demagoguery. We have to wonder if an attack with a “weapon of Mass Disruption” has yet to occur. It’s all quite sobering to think about.

An important book. Just read it and other info on this serious matter. Be informed. Doubters here reinforce the Russian line.

I was a bit skeptical when I picked up this book but quickly got engrossed in the details it presents about Russian spy craft, Putin, Trump's extensive Russian dealings and alliances, and the elaborate procedures, including hacking, that make up this ongoing attempt to subvert our elections - to potentially get Trump in - who espouses unwittingly a soft embrace of Russian aims, and to undermine the world's view of our democracy as disorganized and corrupt. Read the NY Times opinion piece of October 30th by Gary Kasparov about how corrupt the Russian electoral process is - an example being when he ran as opponent of Putin. Disgusting! This is an important book because it educates the reader about how the Russian spy apparatus works on all levels to undermine opponents. It shows Putin to be the brutal manipulator and former KGB chief he is. It is also shocking to see how much Trump has worked with Russian oligarchs and been plied with praise and money contracts - something he is especially responsive to. If you value your democratic system, read this book! Oh, and I'm sure some reviewers will trot out elaborate comments bout how this book is fluff, is based on heresy, and on and on. Read the book and you'll see how Russian Black propaganda by their experts, and those who feel some sympathy try to muddy the waters, make you confused, unsure. That is their job! So read the book and other information on this manipulation of a candidate, hack of our party system, and cynical Russian attempt to control our democracy and our country. It is for real Americans. I read the other reviews with interest and saw a few that toe the Russian line well -just as we expect their disinformation efforts to work. Don't bother Americans. Go to sleep. Let us do our work. Sorry, but after reading the book, you appreciate the efforts of Russian influencers to soften this story and try to make it go away. Putin is watching carefully. Now is the time for us to act.

Important Source For Journalists

As a business magazine editor I find we frequently have to evaluate statistical material. My writers are not uniformly prepared in statistical analysis. They don't have to be. Basic Statistical Analysis (8th Edition) is more than a textbook. We use Dr. Sprinthall's book as our interpreter. We find it authoritative but more importantly, accessible. The author is an effective communicator who allows us to understand the techniques we need without the eye glazing numbness of having to enter a world of baffling jargon, impenetrable examples, and little Greek letters lying on their sides waiting to bite us. I am glad we came upon his works.

By the way, you definitely DO NOT need to be a math major to understand what Sprinthall's up to in this book. I recommend this edition of Statistical Analysis particularly to business and political writers along with every newsroom in the world. Anyone who is wrestling with assertions which are purported to be "proven" by an accompanying body of statistiical "evidence" should have this book on their shelves. Think of it as self-defense.

Very clearly written for beginner, but incorrect end-of-chapter answers

I bought a printed version of this book from Amazon for a statistics course that I'm taking. The book provides clear explanations of concepts, and plenty of example formulas. It gets an A for writing style and concept coverage.

But the end-of-chapter odd numbered answers provided in the back of the book are incorrect. It's not just one or two answers, it is the majority of them. Our instructor provided us with the even numbered answers (likely provided in the instructor resources) and those answers are incorrect as well. See Chapters 5 & 6 if you want to check for yourself. For a book that costs over $136 on Amazon, and $177 from the publisher (Pearson), it could at least be accurate so students can verify their answers.

Pearson and the author need to publish errata on the Pearson website and provide the correct solutions to the end-of chapter problems.

This is the worst textbook I have ever had. Previous editions might have been fine but the 9th Edition is full of errors. Too many problems do not match up with the answers from the back of the book. In class the professor had to give of the correct answers before we could even do the homework. This could lead to total confusion and hours of trying to get an answers that matches up with those in the back of the book, only to find out that you have been doing it right all along, but it was the book that was inconsistent. On the first SPSS example problem in chapter 12 the book tells you exactly how to type it in, but the picture of how to plug the data into SPSS is not consistent with what the first paragraph tells you, so the answer it give you does not match up with the first set of data. When you are dealing with math you expect the book to be mostly error free so you can learn what you are doing, but this book is full of errors and it is a shame that I had to waste my money on this mess of a book. The only thing the 9th Edition is worth is to keep you warm by throwing it in a fire.
