Dated but excellent still

I read this book in English back in the 1970's, and loved it then. The German translation is excellent, and conveys the story every bit as well as the original English. Does this book need a review? It is a classic, it has been referred to and plagiarised in many forms. Anyone interested in sci-fi, and also science/statistics, would find the read well worthwhile.

Sociological Insights into Stimulating Human Progress

Foundation is the story of one man's attempt to positively influence human history beyond the grave for centuries to come. Set far in the future, Hari Seldon's goal is to shorten an impending period of Dark Ages from tens of thousands of years to one thousand years. To do so, he creates an organizational entity, the Foundation, and maneuvers to create circumstances so that the Foundation will recreate the Galactic Empire amid a blossoming of science and technology.

This book is the first in a series that will keep you happily reading for days. In Foundation, the stage is set for the problem, and you will begin to understand the plan that Seldon has employed by examining the first 150 years after the Foundation is established.

The book is built around four crises (Seldon Crises) that shape the potential of the First Foundation to fulfill its goal. In the first crisis, the Foundation is viewed as being a traitorous activity by the political authorities. Seldon explains that his purpose is to create an encyclopedia to encompass all current knowledge before it is lost. The crisis is survived when he agrees to take the project into exile on a planet with few natural resources at the far edge of the galaxy.

Fifty years later, that fledgling is threatened by its powerful neighbors who have greater resources and military power. The Emperor can no longer protect the Foundation. Thirty years after that, another attempt to militarily capture the Foundation occurs. Another seventy years later, a fourth crisis occurs when remnants of the Empire start funneling advanced weapons to planets at the edge of galaxy that oppose the Foundation.

Each crisis is overcome with a different approach, by a different leader. And the Foundation continues to develop towards its eventual form.

These crises are much like a good mystery story. You know there's been a crime that needs to be solved, but you haven't quite figured out how yet. Because there are four crises, you get to enjoy that problem-solving experience four times in one book! Pretty neat!

The Foundation's advantage in all of these crises is that it has advanced knowledge and has applied it, while the rest of the Empire is losing knowledge. Pretty soon, things are falling apart technically for those outside the Foundation. The key technology is built around atomic power (as it appeared it would developed in the 1950s).

Reviewing Foundation is a challenging task. This book has become a science fiction classic, yet many will see little value in it because the science fiction perspectives and forecasts about science are dated. The book has to be read in the context of the books that follow to be fully understood and appreciated, but how does that help the person who has just finished Foundation? Isaac Asimov used a most unusual style in the book, as though you are a historian uncovering bits of primary and secondary sources concerning a long ago period in time (that occurs in our future). That either makes the book more authentic (if you like that) or annoying (if you don't).

At bottom, these contrasts require the reviewer to attempt to capture for the potential reader what makes this book an enduring classic.

First, Foundation squarely asks a fundamental question: How should knowledge be built, maintained, and used for the benefit of all? A subset of that question is: What are the appropriate uses of knowledge? These are questions that we do not wrestle with nearly enough today. Many people enjoy thinking about these questions, and welcome their introduction by this book.

Second, Foundation suggests that progress is faster with the benefit of planning that takes into account human nature. Seldon's discipline is the reliable behavior of large groups of people (psycho-history). Those who like to plan and those that do not will equally enjoy Asimov's scenario for making his point that we should build from our understanding of human behavior. You can debate the point and have lots of fun forever, based on what is here.

Third, many social thinkers have been inspired by the Foundation concept to structure their own changes. Nonviolent political movements match the Foundation concept in many ways, for example. This book gives you a lens to consider many of the global agencies that have been created by international organizations.

Fourth, what should be the relationship between knowledge and power? Usually, they are united. But the Foundation posits a world in which they can be divided, and that division could have some benefits. A current example would be the unharnessed knowledge of the Internet. No government will probably succeed in trying to hold dominion over it.

Science fiction has long played a useful role in helping society to examine its most important scientific questions in advance. Then the concepts that seem useful become the early paradigms of scientific and social progress. In the case of Foundation, that paradigm here is applied to social progress primarily . . . not scientific progress. So think of this as a book about the science fiction of governing.

Foundation suggests a world where knowledge has more power than today, and is also more effective at curbing harmful exercises of power than currently. That shining ideal, I believe, is at bottom the key to understanding Foundation's lasting and broad appeal.

Whether you like, love, are indifferent to, or hate Foundation, I suggest you read the initial trilogy before making up your mind about this book. Much of the genius of Foundation (the first book) isn't apparent to most readers until the trilogy is read and grasped.

One word of caution: Asimov wrote lots of one-draft wonder books, and was certainly not a great craftsman in his writing. Look past that writing quality to the conceptual brilliance of the picture he is painting.

After you have finished the trilogy, ask yourself the question of how you can make knowledge more effective in promoting human moral and economic progress. I think you will find that to be an intriguing question well worth the attention you give to it. And you can think of Foundation to remind you of the question.

This book was bought for a history class, I am taking in the Fall of this year. It came on a timely manner and was as promised in the condition i expected it to be. I have not read it yet, but its a required material for the course so i am sure it will be fine.

Excellent discussion of key issues in Marx

I found this book extremely helpful on the whole. Key issues in Marxism, sometimes neglected within the tradition itself, are discussed and worked through in a straight-forward, clear manner. For instance, there is a lengthy discussion of the role of justice and the good in Marxism. In addition, there is a polemic directed against the allegedly "technological determinist" interpretation of historical materialism articulated by the late G.A. Cohen (see his 1978 book "Karl Marx's Theory of History").

Also, Miller's exegetical account of Marx's theory of the state is probably the best account there is anywhere in the literature. This tightly-argued section is refreshingly clear, and is made even clearer and more persuasive by way of contrast with contemporary alternatives in social science (e.g. Pluralism). Perhaps the strongest aspect of the book lies in its, in my view, successful fulfillment of the following aim: to articulate arguments meant to navigate the abstract theoretical pretensions of philosophy on the one hand, and the empiricist social-scientific aspirations of political science on the other. Too often, social scientists (esp. political scientists and economists, but also sociologists) have a theoretically anemic approach, whereas philosophers often neglect concrete features of actually existing social formations. Miller's aim, whether or not you agree that he makes good on it, should be a more common goal of those working in the general area of social and political thought. This is a must-read for anyone interested in theories of the state, the relationship between morality and socialism, the role of history in political theory, or the relationship between economic institutions and political power.

Interesting philosophical thinking on Marx

An analytical philosopher gives his interpretation of some central themes in Marx's work. He argues: (1) the entire notion of morality as an idealist project is untenable, and that it is not clear that Marx really subscribed to a morality so conceived. (2) There is such a thing as a ruling class. (3) The technological-determinism theory of history that G.A. Cohen attributes to Marx is false, and Marx never held it. Rather he held to a socially-encompassing 'mode of production' theory of history. (4) Positivism provides for an empoverished notion of explanation that should be replaced with a causal realist one (without making overly grand metaphical claims).

Smith's fans remain legion; her 1975 album Horses, a masterpiece, continues to influence and inspire. Her writings, appearing over the years following the band's '80s dormancy, have garnered a cult following not unlike that of Charles Bukowski. The press chat quotes the following from a poem called "The Long Road": "We broke our mother's heart and became ourselves./ We proceeded to breathe and therefore to leave,/ drunken startled beings, each of us a god." It's hard to imagine those lines in a book published by Ecco without Smith to back them up. Yet they do convey what can only be called Smith's mystique, and the book as whole effectively transmits the affect and aura, as well as the innocence, that make her a rock star: one believes in her. There are better lines and poems among the 24 short lyrics (along with the long, diffuse "Birds of Iraq"); the book certainly eclipses, say, Billy Corgan's recent Blinking with Fists. There are more polished books of poems by bandleaders (David Berman's Actual Air and Jeff Tweedy's Adult Head come to mind), but these poems allow access to a major artist's thoughts and preoccupations. Eternity In An Hour

Like the other reviewer, we went to see Patti Smith read from her new book on Sunday here in San Francisco, at the Victoria Theater where she went on as a benefit for the fabled Poetry Center at San Francisco State. She introduced AUGURIES OF INNOCENCE in a context very much about William Blake, who wrote a poem two hundred years ago with the same title:

Every morn and every night

Some are born to sweet delight.

Some are born to sweet delight,

Some are born to endless night.

Her book is all about the perils of childhood. One of the poems, "Fourteen," takes the facts and images of the recent Elizabeth Smart case (the Mormon girl kidnapped out of her home in Utah by a "family" of nuts) and recasts it in Blakean terms. Reading "Fourteen" Smith brought us right into a strange, familiar world of danger, even terror. We may not force our children to work until midnight in mills and factories here in the US, but indeed we do force children overseas to do exactly that. As she points out, in private life not much has improved for our children who continue to be exploited sexually and damaged while young.

The new book isn't all about tragedy however, and her reading of "The Long Road" brought smiles and innumerable, involuntary nmods of recognition. Dedicated to her brother and sister, "The Long Road" surveys the whole enchanted world of childhood, the pleasures as well as the tears. Childhood is an anarchic, contested site of adventure, it's the "Never-Never Land" of PETER PAN, and something happens when children bond together against the adult world, they discover an agency that bonds them together as a host of angels. It isn't always pretty, but it's vibrant, even when it's scary.

Another new poem she read related to her recent LP TRAMPIN. This was an elegy, written in Belfast, on the death of an Irish tramp she happened to read in the local newspapers. The poems are pretty much short ones, concentrated bursts of lyric. One poem I didn't think worked very well expanded the legend of the "Three Windows" in Rome, where Smith happened to be at St Peter's Square when the College of Cardinals was electing the new Pope in April. Jokingly she announced it was the end of her "Pope Trilogy," which began long ago (1978?) with her imaginary encounter with John Paul the First in "Wave."

We were delighted when she brought out her guitar and sang some of her songs as well, including "Beneath the Southern Cross," "Wave" of course, "Wing," "My Blakean Year," "Grateful" for Jerry Garcia, "Dancing Barefoot," "Ghost Dance," and "People have the Power" among others. Lenny was there too. In each case you could see Patti reaching back into her enormous catalogue to try to illuminate (casting a searching beam of light) the new poems of AUGURIES. It was an incredible experience, a "poetry reading" that lasted two hours and twenty minutes. When it was over we all of us pondered the mysteries of William Blake and Patti Smith. It is true of a society that it will be judged by how the weakest and smallest among us are treated:

A robin redbreast in a cage

Puts all heaven in a rage.

A dove-house filled with doves and pigeons

Shudders hell through all its regions.

A dog starved at his master's gate

Predicts the ruin of the state.

A horse misused upon the road

Calls to heaven for human blood.

Each outcry of the hunted hare

A fibre from the brain does tear.

I Think She's Lost Her Edge

I'm a huge Patti Smith fan from the late 70's forward. She was inspirational to me from the moment I heard her, late one night on the Vin Scelsa radio show, pouring forth her musical poetry with an intensity I'd never heard from any artist before. When I went off to college in 1977, I had the pleasure of witnessing a performance that was an event like nothing I'd encountered to that point.

SHE is responsible for everything that I began to listen to from that point forward musically - it opened me up to artists I probably would have missed otherwise.

And it stuck with me. I was hooked. I have the most worn copy of "Babel" you've ever seen - and even had her sign this dog-earred version a few years back during another book tour of hers. I have a signed (now framed) poster from a concert I was unable to go to because my mom was dying - a good friend brought it back for me - the short poem on it reflecting that time in my life in a way that still makes me sad, and hopeful each time I read it.

So, I was looking forward to this new collection. For me, I'm just not feeling it. I couldn't get into any of it - try as I might. It seems to be lacking the driving rhythms of earlier poems - the ones that just slipped off the tongue, with a life of their own. I got the references in nearly everything but in this book, I feel lost somewhere. And it isn't like I haven't kept up with her, I know about her losses, her loves, her life, etc.

Now, maybe I'm just not ready for it. This has happened to me before with other music and poetry which did not strike a chord with me until a year or so later. Maybe I'm just out of touch or too old now, or something else I can't put my finger on?

It really pains me to even write that I'm not enjoying this. Maybe, I'll be enlightened down the road but for now, I'd rather be reading her older works.

Saw Patti read last night in San Francisco

I highly recommend this book to anyone in love with words. I'll share a first hand experience with you, because I'm fortunate to live in a city where I could meet the beautiful poet in a small church off of Haight Street and listen to the splendor of her heart, which is what happened last night. When I awoke this morning the world was a better place for me because of it. Her words are here for us all. Birds of Iraq entranced everyone in that small church, as well as The Lovecrafter and The Oracle (inspired by the cherubs pictured on the cover). Then Mummer Love: "Once I awoke and I heard your voice. I caught bits of nature in truth, our whole natural world. I heard the dead. They were calling to me. I felt my powers. Yet I did not go out into the night. I did not go out into the world. I did not use my powers but I wrote what I wrote. My heart cries but my eyes are dry as a salt bed." Ah, my smithian year.

About the Author
Jeanette Landenwitch has been working with her hands all her life. This led her first to an education in interior design, then into a career as a seamstress and clothing designer. For the last ten years, her focus has been on making one-of-a-kind jewelry in silver and gold. She teaches workshops around the world and since 2003 she has been the Executive Director of the PMC Guild International. She lives with her husband Dave in the midwest.

Great stone setting book

If you have been working with silver clay and want to learn how to set stones in your pieces, this is the book for you!! Jeanette Landenwitch has done an excellent job of describing the many ways to set stones, including a list of the stones that can safely be fired in place in the clay, and those that must be set after the silver has been fired. A chapter on tools and materials discusses the tools needed for this work and how they are used, including the various ways to solder. This is followed by a chapter to help you decide the best setting for your particular type of stone, including how to calculate and allow for clay shrinkage. The chapter on bezels includes discussions on how to make bezels from clay, PMC sheet, syringe clay, bezel strip, and how to use purchased bezel cups. I had no idea there were so many different ways to make bezels. This is all followed by a chapter on the design and use of prongs, again made many different ways. The final chapter covers the use of posts, straps, pave, trapped settings, stone inlay, channel work, chip inlay, channel setting and combinations of various settings.

Rather than photographs to illustrate the thorough directions, drawings by Tim McCreight illustrate the various steps. And scattered throughout the book are photographs of beautiful work done by many well-known clay artists. Six artists then describe how they made a piece with set stones. And Tim McCreight uses photos to illustrate how to make a brooch with a malachite cabochon and two moonstones.

A great book for your PMC library

I teach Jewelry and metalworking at a college and have introduced PMC as part of the casting segment. Although this method has not been sanctioned by the state as part of the curriculum, I still include it. I have been reading numerous books on this process and this book by far has the best explanation on setting stones, it goes in great detail and offers good advice. For any individual that is serious in PMC this is an important reference book to have.

A very Useful and Interesting Book

Over 40 methods, techniques and variations for creating settings, each with clear instructions, drawings and examples make this a very special book.
The author states that 'the goal of this book is to expand your repertoire of stone setting options, specifically for use with PMC.' I set out with this in mind as I wanted to find an answer to the question: Does the book come up to this goal?
I found that it does just that.

The book also helped to update my knowledge of the English language: in the list of gem stones I came across the word 'iffi' which I had never yet come across. I found that it means: it might- or might not work. A very useful word,so I suggest that you add it to your vocabulary.

The chapter GEM STONES is a no-nonsense text. It covers the most important things a metal clay worker should know. It includes a list of tests run by the author.
The more I read, the more enthusiastic I became. There was much to try out and much to choose from. This kept me busy for a considerable time.
The final chapter: 'The work behind the work' gives an interesting view on the way in which several artists work. This chapter culminates in Tim McCreight's 'Steps in making a brooch with stones'.
