A long awaited sequel to Nothing but Velvet, we are treated to the story of Lucien Montaine, Marquess of Litchfield, the friend of Jason Sinclair, Duke of Carlysle, who makes an appearance, along with Velvet and their two children in this story. The heroine, Kathryn, is given an interesting background, having been committed to a lunatic assylum so that her uncle can control her fortune. Needless to say various plot complications follow. Another charming romance from Kat Martin, with some serious undertones - women were locked away for a family's convenience - but of course our heroine manages to escape and find the man of her dreams. Written with Kat Martin's usual flair for believable characters, and some interesting supporting roles, this latest book should please her fans, and introduce new readers to her well-crafted books. Always an interesting read, and one of the better writers of this genre, a new Kat Martin book is worth waiting for.

Entertaining Regency romance

The Earl of Dunstan, Douglas Roth, will do anything to control the fortune owned by his niece Lady Kathryn Grayson. Taking advantage of Kathryn's interest in medicine, Douglas claims she tried to poison his daughter. He succeeds in locking up his niece at St. Bartholomew Hospital for the Insane.
Kathryn manages to escape the asylum. She persuades Lucien Montaine, the Marquis of Litchfield, into protecting her, but hides the truth from him. Lucien soon learns that he harbors a lunatic, but cannot quite match that description with the beautiful woman he now loves. Kathryn reciprocates his feelings, but fear of her uncle forces her to take action rather than allowing their relationship to develop. She tricks Lucien into marrying her, but that turns him into her enemy. When she can no longer take his scorn, she flees into the night once again, leaving Lucien to ponder what he really wants out of life.
SILK AND STEEL is a fast-paced story line that centers on the Regency era ease of an aristocratic male can locking up a female under his protection. Kathryn is a warm, intrepid, but desperate character. The smug Lucien is a typical sub-genre protagonist filled with male superiority and aristocratic haughtiness while believing he is always right until he loses his beloved Kathryn. Douglas seems more like the antagonist in the Perils of Pauline. In spite of the cartoon-like villain, Kat Martin's Regency romance remains worth reading as she guts the insides of her audience with the same fears that sends Kathryn running into the night, heart palpitating.

This was a truly excellent story

I'm going to start out by saying I am hooked on Kat Martin's books. I have several other favorite authors, but her books have a way of hooking me in and keeping me enthralled.
The story of Lucien and Kathryn was full of adventure and passion. Kathryn Grayson is a smart, intelligent woman born in the wrong century. She wants desperately to work as a doctor, but it only gets her into trouble. So much trouble, in fact, she winds up in an insane asylum. Her greedy and villainous uncle is behind her horrid treatment, and she becomes desperate to save herself. Lucien becomes her saving grace more than once, and their relationship is full of ups and downs. Lucien is downright yummy. He's dark and passionate, and the image Kat Martin paints of him on several occasions was just wonderful. He's as aristocratic as they come, but he has a soft side to him as well. This makes him endearing and likeable.
As a whole, the story was fast-paced and riveting. However, I did feel that the long separation between Lucien and Kathryn a bit overwhelming. Perhaps it felt a bit too long. Reading good characters makes one want them to NOT be separated for such long periods of time. :)
Now, onto the biggest nitpick: Something is definitely wrong with the editing. I have never read a book with so many glaring errors. At one point, one of the characters was cut off in mid-sentence and a new thread of thought was put in its place. Then, those same exact words were repeated by the hero a few paragraphs later. I was frustrated because I couldn't figure out what the first character was trying to say! I noticed many, many scanning errors. I try not to let grammatical errors and mishaps bother me - nobody's perfect. However, I felt the typos and blips in the story started to detract from the quality of it.
Still, "Silk and Steel" was an excellent read. I refuse to give the story less than 5 stars because of the typos and whatnot. I just hope the editor can do a better job next time.

About the Author

Pankaj Jain obtained his doctoral degree from Syracuse University, New York, USA. He subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA; West Virginia University, Morgantown, USA; University of Kansas, Lawrence, USA; and University of Oklahoma, Norman, USA. Dr. Jain is currently a professor in the Physics Department at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is a theoretical physicist, whose chief interests are in high energy physics and cosmology. Presently, he is working on the models of dark energy and dark matter, cosmic microwave background radiation, observational tests of the cosmological principle, fundamental symmetries of nature, ultra-high energy cosmic rays, and strong interactions.

Not only was it very readable, but it will be a resource I'm sure I will turn to again and again whenever I'm stuck with a character that just won't move. I'm delighted to have found this book, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something to have on the shelf for those days when your story seems to have stopped dead in its tracks. Linda Seger will get you going again, and you'll have fun at the same time!

A Versatile How-To

This book is geared mainly for screenwriting, but it can be useful for novelists and short story writers as well. Linda Seger discusses character backstory, relationships with supporting characters, dialogue, and so on. Plus, there are interviews with today's leading writers across the spectrum. Her narrative is clear and easy to understand, with plenty of examples of both good and bad writing. Even though I'm not a screenwriter, I found this book very useful and entertaining.

An excellant addition

If you're a fan of Stirling's Changeverse (AKA Emberverse)stories and of RPG gaming, this book is an excellent start to a campaign. For those new to RPGs, this gives a good start to the experience, while giving enough room for more experienced players to stretch their abilities.

The product description gives as much information as I could without spoilers.

If you haven't already read Stirling's series, or a least "Dies the Fire", the scenario may be slightly confusing, so I would recommend that it be read by at least the GM running this game.

On a recent trip to London, I was amazed as my cabbie, Steve, nudged forward into the face of three lanes of oncoming traffic to cross a busy intersection that we had been waiting at for over five minutes. In effect, traditional project management looks inward and downward whereas, eXtreme project management looks outward and upward.

Over the past 25 years, we have studied and researched project management and related topics from as many perspectives as possible. We have read every book (currently more than 100) and article (many hundreds) on project management we can find. We have searched the Internet and have attended meetings of professional project management groups such as the Project Management Institute and the Australian Institute of Project Management. In addition, we have discussed our views and models with more than 20,000 project managers in our workshop series.

The longer we look, the more we are convinced that most published project management material has missed the mark. Either the models are too basic and simplistic or too theoretical and complex. In many cases, they are just unrealistic. For example, many project management texts suggest that you have to acquire and implement complex system or project development methodologies (at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars). Critical management issues such as quality, benefits realization, and risk were either completely ignored or plugged in as afterthoughts.

Sometimes we wonder whether the author or expert even lives on the same planet that we do! Their world seems so organized, so rational, so structured, and so devoid of the complex interpersonal politics we see every day in our clients that we wonder whether we have a distorted view of reality.

However, 20,000 people cannot be wrong. Our workshop participants do live on the same planet as we do and in the same world of complex organization dynamics.

Traditional project management approaches reflect the engineering and construction models of project management. They are based on a set of assumptions that are increasingly irrelevant in the chaotic and ambiguous world of organizations facing the new millennium. Concepts such as fixed requirements, long development time frames, stable teams and technology, and passive involvement of project stakeholders who trust their expert project managers have become historical myths.

Our new project management approach has been continuously refined and expanded to reflect the realities of the new business paradigm. It is based on a different set of assumptions that include dynamic requirements, compressed development schedules, virtual teams, unstable technology, and total involvement of project stakeholders. Our project management approach is totally focused on the analysis, measurement, and realization of financial benefits from the project, managing the total whole-of-life project cycle, complete integration of quality issues, and proactive project risk management.

We have evolved our project management approach to be as simple as it can be and as complex as it needs to be.

In his terrific book, Management of the Absurd, Richard Frason (1996) described how James Watt saw something that millions of other people had also seen but "not seen." It was Watt's observation of how steam coming from his tea kettle could be used to power steam engines that sparked the Industrial Revolution. Watt also saw the "invisible obvious" that so many others could not.

So much of this book is about the invisible obvious. Time and time again throughout this book, you'll find yourself saying "Of course! Why didn't I think of that? It's so obvious. It is so simple."

However, as Richard Riodan said when he was mayor of Los Angeles, "Simple and easy aren't the same words."

Most important, as we first stated in 1981 in People and Project Management (1981) and in Third Wave Project Management (Thomsett, 1992), our project management approach is totally focused on people and the relationships among the many people involved in projects.

What This Book Is Not About

This book is not about how to develop work breakdown structures and project schedules. It is not about developing simplistic and mechanical models such as project plans (which are never followed anyway). Most important, it is not boring. Many of the project management books that we have read present project management as some dry, cold, and quasi-scientific "pursuit."

We totally reject this view of project management. Our experience is that project management is one of the most challenging, creative, and exciting activities you can undertake. We hope that this is reflected in this book.

The Structure of the Book

To assist our readers who are under eXtreme project deadlines and working conditions, we have structured the book into three parts for quick access.

Part 1—eXtreme Concepts

This covers the background to XPM. We look at the evolution of project management, the emerging project environment, and the forces driving the need for XPM.

Part 2—eXtreme Tools

This introduces the XPM tools such as RAP sessions, learning loops, success sliders, and the detailed techniques used in XPM planning and tracking.

Part 3—Additional Resources

This includes readings that provide further tips; advanced tools; and related issues such as project sponsorship, negotiation, communication, ethics, and other critical project management concerns. There are additional readings available on our Web site www.thomsett.com.au

Each part is related but they can be read independently if you are in a hurry; though we hope you get to read the entire book eventually. Great project managers will read all of this book.

During our journey as consultants to major organizations, we have seen many strange and wonderful things. In many cases, what we observed put the bizarre events in the series The X Files to shame. At the end of the chapters in Part 2, we have included a section called The P Files (where P represents people or politics). The P Files entries support the points raised in the associated chapter.

A Note on Terminology

Throughout this book we refer to business projects. This term includes all the typical elements of business process redesign and development, new policy development, IT development, and change management. Readers who have either a business or IT background will find the concepts and techniques relevant. After all, there is no such thing as an IT project. eXtreme projects embrace and include all aspects of business, IT, policy, administration, human resources, change, and research effort that all projects should include. We also do not use the term user, which we dislike intensely, to refer to non-technical people. As we explain in the next chapter, this term has been used to marginalize and diminish the critical role that business experts and clients play in contemporary projects.

Radical project management

Writing this review somewhat historically as I initially purchased this about 8 years.
I enjoyed the first reading with some step-change thinking on progressing beyond incremental phased approached (especially for 2004 period) where I review this book from time to time as a refresher.
Although I still encounter people doing projects who prefer the Waterfall approach, who would definitely benefit by reading and understanding this well worn book.

Today's guide on project management for the IT professional

Five years ago I read the most insightful and inspiring book on project management I had ever seen. This was morbidly titled "Deathmarch" due to the proliferation of unrealistic projects that I.T. teams found themselves caught up in.
I have now found a new contender for my favourite book on the topic, in Radical Project Management by Rob Thomsett. Coincidentally, it is part of a series edited by Ed Yourdon, the author of Deathmarch!
This book is novel in its approach by embracing two key facts.
Firstly, project management is no longer a dry topic, best left to crusty managerial types. The modern I.T. professional needs to be all of network guru, web developer, database administrator, software developer and, of course, project manager. Hence, even the most hands-on techie has to grip this topic!
Secondly, traditional project management methodologies are losing relevance in today's wired world where the only constant factor is change.
Thomsett argues that such practices are inward-looking and static. Conversely, his "Radical" philosophy looks outward, embracing stakeholders, management and end-users, seeking to involve them in the project's development from conception to implementation.
This is what Thomsett means by calling his philosophy "radical" - it departs from tradition. The term also, to my mind, plays on the "RAD" - Rapid Application Development - paradigm that boosted languages like Delphi and Visual Basic into the limelight. RAD languages also sought to involve end-users in the creative development process by allowing the rapid construction of functional prototypes.
Of course, a mere philosophy by itself is insufficient (consider the USSR!) and pleasingly, Thomsett fills his pages with case studies, details of new project management tools and how to successfully use them, and just good common-sense and stories "from the chalk face". As one reads this book, it is abundantly evident that the author is writing from a wealth of experience - this book is by an I.T. professional for I.T. professionals.
I wholeheartedly recommend it, and it certainly has found a place on my desk.

Going beyond the Gannt Charts

Finally a practical project management book that goes beyond Gannt charts, time lines or budgets. I have already found it useful in finding out why and where some of my projects went wrong and the lessons I can learn for the future.
Thomsett has added principles to project management that have often been talked about, but that are rarely (and effectively) applied; for example quality, realisation of business objectives, distinction between project objectives and solutions.
This is not just a book for project managers; anybody who is involved in projects in some way or another (business analysts, HR professionals, people who commission projects) will get a better understanding of what it takes to deliver projects successfully.
And if you're a movie fanatic - you'll love the references to some great classics.

About the Author

Bruce M. Hyman, PhD, LCSW, is a cognitive behavioral therapist in private practice in Hollywood, FL, and has been the director of the OCD Resource Center of Florida (www.ocdhope.com) since 1991. He specializes in the cognitive behavioral treatment of adults and children with OCD, OCD spectrum disorders, and anxiety disorders, and is coauthor of Coping with OCD.

Cherry Pedrick, RN, is a registered nurse and freelance writer in the greater Seattle, WA, area. She is coauthor of Loving Someone with OCD, Helping Your Child with OCD, The Habit Change Workbook, The BDD Workbook, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Anxiety Disorders.

Excellent Book, Broad Coverage of the Topic

This is a great book for OCD sufferes and their families. The book is comprised of several different approaches that all work together to build a helpful overall viewpoint of OCD and to also offer a way through the problems that this illness causes. There are case studies, questionaires, snippets of advice for family members, and exposure-response prevention cognitive behaviour therapy (ERP CBT) exercises proven to help people to get past the fears associated with their OCD. The book is very accessible and the writing style is compassionate and easy to read--I have read far drier OCD books! One of the main advantages of this book is the variety of the information and the diversity with which it is presented. Quite often people are not diagnosed with OCD for many years after it begins to trouble them. I think that this is because so many normal people (if there is truly such a creature) also have the same sorts of thoughts that the people with OCD have. Therefore, many people who do have OCD spend years wondering why life seems to be so much harder for them than for other people, since "everyone has thoughts they don't want, so what's wrong with me?". By reading through the case studies you have a chance to perhaps see your own problems; and the questionaires also give you a range of issues that OCD patients suffer with. Being able to identify with the cases and symptoms presented at a glance is great for people who might not be sure whether or not they are OCD. The vast relief you can find from simply being able to realise that, "Those thoughts don't mean I am bad; they're just OCD" is hard to over-value.

I have two issues with this book. One is that the author is, in my opinion, too quick to dismiss the potential of natural therapies. Really only one paragraph is devoted to this topic and he is brief and almost disparaging in his dismissal, stating that there are no studies showing any benefits from natural therapies. Perhaps he has not seen any, but there are actually quite a number of natural treatments that offer at least as much success as the standard presciption medication treatment that he is--again, in my opinion--a little overly fond of. This is a widely contested topic and the chances are good that you will already fall into the pro-natural therapies camp or not, but in any case, I suggest that you look elsewhere for solid information on this area. The OCD Workbook does not have any to offer.

My second niggle is with the ERP exercise itself--in some applications. In short, the basic premise is to repeat something you have an obseeive fear towards until you are bored of it. That's rather simplified, but I don't want to go into too much detail! Anyhow, I agree that this reduces the fear associated with not carrying out the related compulsion. (I can hardly disagree; studies have proven it to be so). However, many other psychological studies have shown far greater benefits for people who, instead of concentrating on their fears, move towards a vision of freedom. But there are no books I know of that teach this specifically for OCD, yet. Perhaps I will write one. :)

Not for me

I purchased this from Amazon based on Amazon's recommendation because of a few other books I had bought. I had just finished reading "Brain Lock" by Jeffrey M. Schwartz. I found that they were similar, but I already had so many tools that I learned in the other book that I found this one to be too detailed and rigorous. In my case, I would just recommend reading "Brain Lock" and skipping this one.

This book really helps explain what OCD is and all the variations in symptoms. It does not only focus on perfectionism and light switch flicking. While those are very important and debilitating symptoms to discuss, it's nice to learn what other symptoms are a part of OCD and what can be done about them. For example, violent thoughts and images/impulses. It's informative and helps you take action against OCD.
