Jane Hughes has worked for many years as a freelance illustrator. She trained as a graphic designer at Maidstone College of Art, and subsequently worked as a printmaker and lecturer while developing her illustration career. Her work has apperared in advertising, magazines, and books on packaging, and in many other applications. Jane works in a variety of media, of which oil pastels are a great favorite. She is also a keen sailor, gardener, and kite-flyer.

A not so useful oil pastel painting book

Having recently purchased a few books on oil pastel I think this is one of the least useful. Overall, the discussion is more devoted to painting aspects such as colour theory, perspective, inventing a composition. But this information is available in any quality book on drawing and painting. There is simply not enough information relating to actually using the oil pastels. Of the books available this would be my last choice. If you are making a collection, you will probably pick one up quite cheaply. I did; but a quick flick through and it is is now on the shelf and probably will not be used again. Definitely better choices available in my opinion.

Good introduction to oil pastels

Ms. Hughes offers a nice concept of instruction book, selection of art paper, and 16 oil pastel crayons. The book is very informative with a useful cross section of techniques and examples. My only complaint: the oil pastels in the kit have their shortcomings. They are somewhat subdued in hue and tend toward the earth tones, so the student will quickly need to purchase more crayons in order to achieve meaningful results. Since the true maker of "Workstation" oil pastels is not identified, the crayons are difficult to match or replace.

About the Author
Anil V. Rao earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering and A.B. in mathematics from Cornell University, his M.S.E. in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University. After earning his Ph.D., Dr Rao joined The Aerospace Corporation in Los Angeles, California, where he was involved in mission support for U.S. Air Force launch vehicle programs and trajectory optimization software development. Subsequently, Dr Rao joined The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc., in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he has been involved in numerous projects related to trajectory optimization, guidance, and navigation of aerospace vehicles. Concurrently, for the past several years Dr Rao has been an Adjunct Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Boston University where he has taught the core undergraduate engineering dynamics course. Since joining BU, Dr Rao has been voted AIAA/ASME Faculty Member of the Year Award by the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department and has been voted Boston University College of Engineering Professor of the Year for outstanding teaching.

Excellent book for intro/intermediate dynamics class

Dr. Rao presents the subject of Dynamics to his reader in a very clear and concise manner. If you're an undergraduate taking dynamics for the first time, you're lucky that your professor is assigning this book - it's ten steps above Beer and Johnston. Rao's book is also well-suited for a graduate course. I enrolled in his grad class at UF last semester and quickly realized that my undergrad dynamics coursework (based on Beer & Johnston) was not the correct way to learn the subject. This book helped me master the fundamentals so that by the end of the semester I was much more confident in my ability to analyze dynamical systems.

This book made me love geography.

I dreaded the idea of taking geography last semester, but this book made it a lot deeper than maps and mountains and borders. It discusses relevant topics about each country, is very interesting, and easy to understand. I loved it. I'm making my sister take this class next year in hopes that it will benefit her as much as it did me.

Easy-to-Digest Textbook

Excellent geography textbook. I have used this edition (and the previous edition) for two World Geography classes. The text provides a good overview of concepts related to world geography and divides the world into "Realms". It uses a consistent format of two-part chapters for the majority of the book - the first, an overview of the realm, the second describes regions of that realm. Detailed maps are provided at the beginning of each chapter and within the chapters themselves. This consistency of layout, and an almost conversational writing style provide an easy to read and understand textbook that is suitable for beginning geography students. The Appendix B provides a wealth of demographic data that can be used to easily understand the differences between realms, countries within a realm and between all countries.

Notes about the Kindle version: The book does not fill the whole screen of the Kindle Fire HD, but is a scaled reproduction of the print book (other than some pages that show maps). If reading in the portrait mode, the maps and Appendix B (which in the print book are landscape) will change size and turn (from landscape) to be easily read in the portrait mode. If you can afford it, I encourage you to purchase the physical book, as it is richer, more immersive experience, especially with the maps and appendices.

A Little Disappointed.

I ordered this Geography textbook for my Kindle Fire HDX 7 under the assumption that I could do the reading in my tablet and view the maps on the Amazon Cloud Reader. This book is not available for Cloud viewing. The "look inside" was very misleading and this sales feature should be removed. The book is a high quality pdf and not a Kindle copy so fortunately the pinch zoom works very well. With this in mind, given the price, it is an exceptional value.

About the Author

Jeff Doyle, CCIE No. 1919, is vice president of research at Fishtech Labs. Specializing in IP routing protocols, SDN/NFV, data center fabrics, MPLS, and IPv6, Jeff has designed or assisted in the design of large-scale IP service provider and enterprise networks in 26 countries over 6 continents. He worked with early IPv6 adopters in Japan, China, and South Korea, and has advised service providers, government agencies, military contractors, equipment manufacturers, and large enterprises on best-practice IPv6 deployment. He now advises large enterprises on evolving data center infrastructures, SDN, and SD-WAN.

Jeff is the author of CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP, Volumes I and II and OSPF and IS-IS: Choosing an IGP for Large-Scale Networks; a co-author of Software Defined Networking: Anatomy of OpenFlow; and an editor and contributing author of Juniper Networks Routers: The Complete Reference. He also writes for Forbes and blogs for both Network World and Network Computing. Jeff is one of the founders of the Rocky Mountain IPv6 Task Force, is an IPv6 Forum Fellow, and serves on the executive board of the Colorado chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC).

Jeff lives in Westminster, Colorado, with his wife Sara and a Sheltie named Max, the Forrest Gump of the dog world. Jeff and Sara count themselves especially fortunate that their four grown children and a growing herd of grandchildren all live within a few miles.

About the Author
Roger LeRoy Miller has served on the faculty of several universities, including the University of Washington, Clemson University, and the University of Miami School of Law. As professor he has taught intellectual property law, entertainment law, and other subjects. A widely published and respected author, his work has appeared in the Insurance Counsel Journal, Defense Research, California Trial Lawyers Journal, Antitrust Bulletin, Wisconsin Law Review, and Connecticut Law Review. He has authored or co-authored numerous authoritative textbooks on law, including BUSINESS LAW: TEXT & CASES, BUSINESS LAW TODAY: TEXT & SUMMARIZED CASES, and THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT TODAY. He completed his studies at the University of California at Berkeley and University of Chicago.

Gaylord A. Jentz was the Herbert D. Kelleher Emeritus Centennial Professor in Business Law at the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Business. He received his B.A., M.B.A., and J.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Jentz was a past president of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, the Southwestern Federation of Administrative Disciplines, the Southern Business Law Association, Phi Kappa Phi (UT Chapter), and the Texas Association of College Teachers. He was the author or coauthor of six monographs and 56 books and editions, including WEST'S BUSINESS LAW: TEXT & CASES, Tenth Edition; FUNDAMENTALS OF BUSINESS LAW, Seventh Edition; and several versions of BUSINESS LAW TODAY. He also published in several learned journals and was past editor-in-chief of the American Business Law Journal. Dr. Jentz gave advanced purchasing seminars throughout the United States and taught at five regional and graduate banking schools. He was the recipient of 16 teaching, academic, and service excellence awards, including the CBA Foundation Award for Excellence in Education, the CBA Foundation Advisory Council Distinguished Scholastic Contributions Award, the Academy of Legal Studies in Business Faculty Excellence Award, the Western States School of Banking Leadership Award, the James C. Scarboro Memorial Award for Outstanding Leadership in Banking Education, and The University of Texas "Civitatis" Award. Manson as never before

An excellent job of providing balance to the helter skelter story. A lot of new information here which answers questions from another point of view. Despite the crimes Charlie Manson is a fascinating creature.

After learning about ATWA, listening to and reading some of Manson's unedited thoughts, and feeling that there was clearly much more to the Manson saga than what the media has to say, I decided to pick up this book as part of a larger effort in understanding.

The image that emerges reminds me of a Cormac McCarthy novel, with the same bittersweet violence, passion, innocence, and madness, and always an underlying theme of tragedy. Manson is, and always will be a survivor. It would not be wrong to say that he has been subjected to continuous trauma and abuse since the day he came into the world. Do I believe he should be held responsible for the crimes that others professed to commit in his name? No, I don't. I don't think he's necessasarily a "good guy", either. On his level, I understand him, and perhaps even admire him for always sticking to his principles and codes, even when it lead him into situations that he could have otherwise avoided. He is right in remarking that he has always done the best with what he was given. I don't resonate with much of his philosophy simply because it is so damn wounded, while other aspects of his personality are crystal clear and finely attuned. No one is perfect, least of all ole' Charlie. He certainly doesn't deserve to be followed and revered for being anything other than human. But that's all he's been saying all along, anyhow.

A complex book, and a difficult subject, but one which I benefited from researching! Manson's voice is one that ought to be heard, if not simply because the vision behind it is so unique.

A fresh and well written perspective deserving on the case

I've read most of the well known books on Manson and the Family. This one deserves its place as probably the most sober-minded examination of entire episode. Stimson, although clearly sympathetic to Manson and even a little biased due to their friendship, is an excellent writer who deconstructs the events and tells the story from each player's perspective using quotes from parole hearings, the trial, and their own autobiographical accounts. He does a surprisingly good job at putting forward the "brother" motive and finally putting to rest the "helter skelter" motive the prosecution used to convict Manson, et al.
Highly recommended for fans of true crime and, especially, Mansonology. This book is for the Manson case what Philip Sugden's Complete Jack the Ripper was for the that case. Or, at least as close as we will probably ever get to shedding the hoodoo boogeyman image of Manson in favor of evidence.

Way better than.the normal easyway book

I actually bought both books :-)

The easyway one and the onlyway one.

The onlyway is quite a bit longer and more of a narrative style.

For some reason the onlyway got through to me whereas the easyway book didn't.

Bear in mind that both books are about the easyway to stop smoking.

I'm now a happy (seriously) non smoker. Really this is totally different to trying to give up cigarettes using willpower.

If you have a rational mind you will appreciate his methods :-)

With so many other reviews about this book out there I will not spend a lot of time or words on Allen Carr's volume here. Others have described it very well. I have read his "Easyway To...." several times which is a more concise (meaning less wordy) book focusing on a brief history of his "discovery" and personal journey with smoking to his ideas about smoking and stopping that make up the basics of his program. AFTER reading, or shall I say attempting to read this volume, I went with an e-reader copy of Carr's "Little Book of Quitting" for personal review purposes. Perhaps I over indulged (pun intended) in Carr's wisdom, but to be honest I could not get through this massive volume.
Qualifications about this volume : I think he wrote it B4 writing the slimmer "Easyway" book. It is a thick softcover and goes into great detail the logic and illogic of ideas related to smoking and stopping. It is printed in small font, and that is an issue for me these days (an e reader lets you magnify / zoom for easier viewing) and I have read so many books over the years it was probably a personal thing that I could not finish it. I cannot blame Carr for the style of publication, but as a reader I can say "too much information" and aim it at him/her. It was too much for me, anyway.
Conclusion : IF you have the time, energy, and patience to swim with this volume, then go ahead, you will probably learn a great deal about smoking and aspects of it. Hey skeptics. It works.

It helped me quit. Quit for nine years and started up for four years and it was way harder to quit the second time. Tried patches and cutting down without success. Willpower was useless. At wits end I read this and quit. No withdrawals. No need for patches. No longing for the routine of lighting up and relaxing after work. It just worked.

Pleasantly surprised, but needs an editor

I picked up this book during the free promotion, and honestly, I didn't want to like it. I think I've read everything Alison has written, and the obvious lack of editing in all of her books has gotten really tiresome to me. But I keep reading Alison because she has a unique voice - no, a unique soul. There are other copycat writers, but with Alison you really get the feeling that she is genuine. I expected The Art of HomeMaking to be old and tired, but it is not. Broken out into 30 days of thoughtful "homework" for the homemaker, it feels do-able and fresh even to those of us who have read approximately a zillion books on the subject.

The lack of structure made this book impossible to follow. Lines and even pages repeating and pages beginning with lines that obviously belonged somewhere else made for confusion. I hope my homecaring is not so careless as the editing of this book.

I like Alison's books due to the feel good, cozy factor in all her ideas. I very often put them into practice and my home is better for it. I did not give it the full 5 marks due to the cutesy talk and over use of the word scrumptious which really grates on you after a while. If she cleaned up that habit it would be a full 5 stars from me : )

Abi Adams, Associate Professor of Economics, University of Oxford,Damian Clarke, PhD student in Economics, University of Oxford,Simon Quinn, Associate Professor of Economics, University of Oxford

Abi Adams is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford, a Research Fellow at the Institute of Fiscal Studies and a Cowles Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research focuses on consumer choice, with a particular interest in nonparametric methods and revealed preference theory.

Damian Clarke is a DPhil (PhD) student in economics at the University of Oxford, with research focusing on maternal and child health and education, fertility and family size, and applied microeconometrics. Damian has worked for a range of international organisations and government bodies in Latin America and in West Africa.

Simon Quinn is an Associate Professor of Economics and a Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies at the University of Oxford. Simon's research interests lie primarily in the study of firms and development.
