Over the past sixty years, many scientists have disregarded the study of philosophy and labeled the conscious mind as indefinable. But the truth is that ever since the Reformation, science and philosophy have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship. Philosophy provides science with both its creative spark and ethical guidelines, while advances in science continuously redefine the boundaries of philosophical thought.

Both disciplines have the same goal: uncovering the secrets of the universe and our place within it. In Science and Mind, physicist and cryptologist John Bart Wilburn explores the historical connections between science and philosophy, starting with Descartes’s radical description of rationalism in Meditations on First Philosophy, a treatise that signaled the beginning of rational, modern thought.

Carefully paced and eminently readable, Science and Mind describes significant scientific and philosophical advancements in terms that can be easily understood by those outside the two disciplines, firmly establishing the impact modern, rationalist thinking has on our culture, our daily lives, and our very notion of self.

Review
Stanford's CodeX Book Club Book ReviewAugust 18, 2016

Congratulations to Kelvin Chin, with the launch of his new book, "Overcoming the Fear of Death (Through Each of the 4 Main Belief Systems)." I haven't read it yet, but I know Chin--and that's enough for me to predict that it is a great book. So I'm giving him an honorary four-star (and I'm guessing many readers may pronounce it a five-star).

Chin is the Executive Director and Founder of Overcoming the Fear of Death Foundation and TurningWithin.org.

I met him several years ago when he was in Boston at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge. He got his J.D. at Boston College Law School, and also studied at Dartmouth College (B.A,), Universite de Strasbourg and Yale Graduate School.

Chin's eclectic education rivals his eclectic career. "He has lived and worked in six countries," Chin notes in his linkedin profile.  He's got tech in his bones--including president of AgreeOnline, a startup for alternative dispute resolution. (He was vice president of the American Arbitration Association for 10 years). He was a Visiting Instructor at MIT Sloan School of Management and Ombudsman at the Office of the President at MIT.

There's more: Practice Director at H5; Consulting Director at RenewData; also Sales Director of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, just to name a few. He's now a Nonprofit Executive Director, Grief Recovery Specialist, based in Austin.

Congratulations, Kelvin. This is a very important topic and I am sure that your new book will bring comfort to many. I salute you for diving into this topic with your wit, wisdom and grace.

"Overcoming The Fear Of Death: Through Each of the 4 Main Belief Systems"by Kelvin H. Chin

When examining consciousness, we would be remiss not to speak of death and what we think happens to our consciousness when we make the final transition in this plane.

We want to introduce you to a friend with an expansive experience practicing and teaching meditation who has written a book called "Overcoming the Fear of Death."

As a teacher of meditation for 40 years, Kelvin Chin has deep experience in the field of self-development, and brings a refreshing "pragmatic idealist" approach, grounded in "knowing oneself," to his work in legal services, business development, mediation, meditation, and overcoming the fear of death.

He has been working with audiences on death and dying issues since the 1980's and has taught numerous seminars for the healthcare industry, was a Long Term Care Ombudsman for the California Department of Aging, and a co-founder of the Center For Medical Ethics and Mediation.

His book is unique. He outlines 4 belief systems regarding death that underlie all religions and cultures. His approach is nonreligious and aims to increase readers' understandings about death through their own lens of belief without creating a need to modify their individual belief structures to reduce their fear of death.

He explains 4 Main Belief Systems About Death:
1) No Belief in Afterlife
2) Afraid of Heaven or Hell
3) Looking Forward to Heaven
4) Belief in Past Lives

He walks people through the process using personal stories from friends and family in a way that humanizes the subject, making the book a 'fun read.'

Kelvin has taught meditation in living rooms, schools,  businesses worldwide for 40 years and does work with individuals in person and via phone, Internet, and Skype. Kelvin has taught more than 1,000 people from extremely diverse socio-economic groups an easy-to-learn technique of naturally Turning Within with no concentration or religious affiliation required.

He recommends a process of 'Turning Within' when he speaks on "Overcoming the Fear of Death".  By this he means the ancient Greek sense of going within, 'knowing oneself'; being more balanced and effective in one's thoughts and actions after meditation lead to a happier, more fulfilling life.

To share a bit more about Kel's extensive background:

He was a test subject in the first medical studies on meditation -- conducted by Boston cardiologist Herbert Benson, MD (published in Scientific American, 1972). He taught the first meditation classes at West Point Military Academy in 1974, and in the US Army on the DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) in Korea. He is a graduate of Dartmouth, Yale, and Boston College Law.

Kelvin studied at the Université de Strasbourg, France. In addition to Dartmouth, Kel has degrees from Yale Graduate School and Boston College Law School. He has lived and worked in 6 countries and has 25 years experience as a global business manager. He has held CEO, EVP, SVP and CMO positions in companies ranging from start-ups to large established organizations and has trained 500 mediators to do Alternative Dispute Resolution in the last 20 years.

He has spoken on overcoming the fear of death at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco.

Clear, Compassionate Thinking
By George Hammond
Overcoming the fear of death requires clear, compassionate thinking, which Kelvin Chin shares with readers throughout his new book. Kelvin draws on his strengths as a storyteller and a popular lecturer to explain why we don't need to be afraid of death no matter what we believe about it — and Kelvin covers the whole range of beliefs, from the totally materialistic to the most exotic versions of an afterlife. Since death is as normal a part of life as birth is, Kelvin effectively encourages us to stop scaring ourselves silly about it.

KELVIN'S TM MEDITATION HISTORY (1970 - 1978)

In the summer of 1971, Kelvin attended the one-month teacher training program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. After graduating early from Dartmouth, Kelvin completed the TM teacher training program in La Antilla, Spain with Maharishi and returned as the New Hampshire State Coordinator for the TM movement. He continued to lecture, teach TM, and lead advanced TM residence courses, including a one-month in-residence program to 600 participants on the Science of Creative Intelligence (SCI) at the University of Maine, Orono.

At Yale Graduate School, Kelvin continued teaching TM at the university and throughout Connecticut. In 1974, on behalf of the TM movement, Kelvin successfully renegotiated its lease with Yale University. He also taught the first TM meditation courses at West Point Military Academy, which involved lectures and meditation classes to several hundred cadets, officers, and staff.
Within days of graduating from Yale, Kelvin got a phone call from Maharishi saying that the TM organization had a free first class round-trip ticket on Swissair's inaugural flight to Hong Kong and that he would like Kelvin to go there to teach TM.

As the first National Leader of Hong Kong and Director of Expansion in East Asia, Kelvin established the TM organization and lectured to all sectors of Hong Kong society including business, education, and government, and was a guest speaker on television shows, at universities, and was featured in many newspaper articles in the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Standard, Sing Tao Daily, and others. He also lectured and taught the first TM courses in the US Army in South Korea teaching on all the bases, including on the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) between North and South Korea.

The last official TM project that Maharishi asked Kelvin to lead involved the training of Chinese American meditators to become TM teachers to prepare them to teach in the People's Republic of China. This special project was based at Maharishi International University (MIU) in 1978. Kelvin no longer teaches TM meditation, but credits Maharishi for revolutionizing the practice of meditation worldwide by bringing attention to the fact that any meditation can and should be effortless.

Kelvin teaches both private sessions and group classes worldwide — including Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Although his days are occupied with teaching and speaking he is still very accessible to help people seeking insight into meditation and/or removing the fear of death.

Your life will be better after thinking about death!
By Sultan Salah
I've thought deeply about death since I was a young girl, simply because I was given to thinking deeply about life and could see from an early age that life would flash by in the blink of an eye. And yet, "death" was so obviously a taboo subject that I developed the habit of keeping my thoughts and concerns about it to myself.
As I read through this book, I felt a great sense of relief. I had the experience that a skilled and compassionate teacher was guiding me through my own thought processes. The result is that I have developed a healthier attitude about death. Also - interestingly enough - I've noticed that the more I am at ease thinking about death, the more I am able to enjoy the present moment. I now think that avoidance of the idea and reality of death prevents the full acceptance of life, because the full value of one cannot exist without the other.

Battle-tested
By Ken Kardash
As an anesthesiologist I was interested in possibly applying hypnosis as an adjunct for pain relief and sedation in patients undergoing surgery. This book appealed to me because of its practicality. It is short, concise and results-oriented. The fact that Dr. Lang developed and refined her approach in the setting of interventional radiology attracted my interest because the time and pressure stakes are comparable to the operating room. Other books on hypnosis I'd seen involved psychotherapy or personal improvement applications, where the subject is already motivated and usually in a more relaxed setting. In fact, I'd assumed that the technique could only work if undertaken under calm conditions in advance. But the approach used here is applied in real time, as the patient is undergoing the actual procedure. That and the fact that the authors offer it to all patients, not just a select sub-group, convinced me that the technique must be effective.

The writing and organization of the book further reassured me that this is a no-nonsense, systematic approach whose results can be objectively measured. Each chapter starts with a short case report that not only illustrates a point, but also the clinical details of which convinced me that the authors have extensive real-life experience dealing with anxious patients! The chapters are bite-sized and clear, consistently evidence-based and referenced, and end with a bullet list summary of key points. In fact, it could be fairly described as a manual for procedural hypnosis, including scripts for induction that can be used verbatim. Of course, as I'm sure the authors would agree, some supplemental training would be highly desirable.

I congratulate the authors on their refreshing pragmatism and offer my five stars.

This totally changed my view about hypnosis.
By Paul Cohen
This totally changed my view about hypnosis. Previously my idea of it was probably similar to a lot of people’s: and would involve images of a magician on stage getting somebody to do something silly for the entertainment of others. Or, one of my friends would go off to be hypnotized by a mysterious character to stop smoking.

But it turns out that medical staff are using hypnotic techniques to provide real benefit to patients undergoing procedures where sedation is either not desirable or not an option.

An example would be an MRI, where a patient has to stay still for a very long time. I’ve never had an MRI, but had previously thought it might be rather soothing. But what I didn’t realize is how long you have to be in there for, and that it is quite noisy.

The way it’s explained is that under hypnosis you enter a state a lot like day-dreaming, or “spacing-out” – which I certainly can relate to. Wouldn’t it be great to “space-out” during a long procedure you’re not looking forward to? Medical Hypnosis does just that.

In an NIH funded study, patients were offered the option of a “relaxation exercise” before under going the procedure. To keep things consistent, all the healthcare providers used the same standard script devised by a Stanford Psychiatry Professor.

The book contains that script.
As a non-medical person, and a squirmy patient I found it fascinating.

The book tangentially gave me an a-ha moment concerning people who don’t make eye contact. I’d always thought they were being rude, but in fact it is just their particular way of listening intently, dictated by their sensory style (sight, sound, touch etc.)

The other a-ha moment concerns building rapport between doctor and patient. And how things small things might affect it.
I have experienced this first hand in my doctor’s consulting room.
He is a wonderful doctor, but the layout of the room places him very far away from me; and we are separated by a computer. It all conspires to make me feel rather isolated, and is not an ideal layout for our rapport to flourish.

Great Book
By Oxcart
This is a great book. I recommend it for teaching to be used as a textbook for learning hypnosis/guided imagery in clinical settings. It reinforces that this isn't neurosurgery and can even be done by use of a script. Great examples and helpful hints to move you along.
You will find this a great addition to your library.

Discovering Computer Science: Interdisciplinary Problems, Principles, and Python Programming (Chapman & Hall/CRC Textbooks in Computing)

Discovering Computer Science: Interdisciplinary Problems, Principles, and Python Programming introduces computational problem solving as a vehicle of discovery in a wide variety of disciplines. With a principles-oriented introduction to computational thinking, the text provides a broader and deeper introduction to computer science than typical introductory programming books.

Organized around interdisciplinary problem domains, rather than programming language features, each chapter guides students through increasingly sophisticated algorithmic and programming techniques. The author uses a spiral approach to introduce Python language features in increasingly complex contexts as the book progresses.

The text places programming in the context of fundamental computer science principles, such as abstraction, efficiency, and algorithmic techniques, and offers overviews of fundamental topics that are traditionally put off until later courses.

The book includes thirty well-developed independent projects that encourage students to explore questions across disciplinary boundaries. Each is motivated by a problem that students can investigate by developing algorithms and implementing them as Python programs.

The book's accompanying website — http://discoverCS.denison.edu — includes sample code and data files, pointers for further exploration, errata, and links to Python language references.

Containing over 600 homework exercises and over 300 integrated reflection questions, this textbook is appropriate for a first computer science course for computer science majors, an introductory scientific computing course or, at a slower pace, any introductory computer science course.

Review

"Havill’s book introduces computer science in a very unique and effective way. The book discusses fundamental computer science concepts such as abstraction, repetition, condition, and recursion through real-world problems such as personal finance, population growth, DNA sequence, and earthquake analysis. The book is designed for a CS 1 course for majors, a CS 0 course for nonmajors with omissions, or a basic computing course for natural or social sciences students. Traditional introductory computer science content is well covered, though in a different way compared to most other introductory books. Most other introductory CS books would arrange the topics either around features of programming such as objects, variables, repetitions, conditions, and functions, or around data structures or algorithms such as list, array, graph, search, and sorting. Havill’s book presents readers with the same content using topics of real-world problems as a road map. ... For each problem studied, the author provides ample details in fine language so students can follow the discussions easily. Plenty of "Reflections" are presented throughout the discussions that inspire students to think deeper and synthesize what they just learned. ... The book is best suited for computer science majors, or students from natural sciences or social sciences. It requires a certain level of maturity with mathematics. With careful choices of omission by the instructor, students of other majors can definitely benefit from the book as well, as the author points out in the preface."

Engaging, entertaining, enlightening
By Alex
This book is incredibly easy to follow when compared to other computer science textbooks, and is written in a style that is both entertaining and engaging. The book is arranged according to a progression of computational concepts rather than as a manual of the Python language, and emphasizes development of problem-solving skills over memorization of methods and function. The book also boasts a massive number of exercises and projects of varying difficulty levels, to cumulatively apply the concepts that have been taught over the course of the book. All in all, one of the best computer science textbooks out on the market.

Comprehensive and Well-Written Textbook
By Rebecca
I took an intro computer science course this past fall that used this textbook. The textbook organized concepts in a logical sequence, and chapters were very readable. End of chapter exercises were varied and fun
