Must be 1st book

Glad it was $.99 because I hated it. Horrible editing, and a very disjointed story with so many jumps in illogic that it was comical. Being able to immediately communicate with an alien race Seemingly in a matter of minutes, and miraculosly be able to construct ships at will is not even in a believable story in SciFi.

When I purchased the book there were no reviews to read;but I took a chance.That was a mistake.So when I went back on amazon to get another book I noticed two reviews of the book.(Scifi Fanactic & A west) After reading them I realized between the two of them they perfectly covered everything I thought was wrong with the story. ditto.

"Alien Civil War"... so bad it's almost funny.

"Alien Civil War: First Human Contact" is the first book in 'The Knife Series' by author Dennis Hiatt. This e-book was re-edited and posted on March 18, 2013
This Kindle e-book was a 271 Kb download (approx. 126 printed pages) and sold for $0.99 at the time of writing this review.

Spoilers

Captain DuCreux of the space warship 'Detroit' comes across a huge object. He finds it is an alien spaceship, sends a boarding party only to awaken the dormant life on board... a cautious friendship ensue. However old enemies are hunting this alien ship... and our story unfolds.

Some thoughts on "Alien Civil War'...

1.) I'd read some other reviews of this work that noted the number of spelling errors, etc. Maybe some of these problems were addressed and corrected with the latest re-edit, because I did not notice many.

2.) I checked the product page on amazon.com and it's listed as Sci-Fi adventure. This then was either a serious attempt to write the tale of a prolonged space encounter with an alien species OR it was a tongue in cheek, space opera spoof or parody. If the former, then it contains some of the worst writing I've ever come across... if the latter, then it still contains some awful writing BUT it may have achieved its goal, because the story, told in the manner that it was, could not have been really taken seriously.

3.a) we have super computer Hal (sound kind of familiar?), the A.I. of the space fleet's flagship, who, on several occasions, tends to laugh 'evilly'.
3.b) nearly every sentient thing, be they people, aliens or computers tend to speak with 'graveled' voices. ('graveled', or a derivative, appeared 38 times... verified by the Kindle search function). Very noticeable.

4.a.) excessive detail with regards to numbers. A couple examples of many... five thousand, two hundred and sixteen missiles or one thousand, seven hundred and eighty two missing starships... countless exact numbers of drones, missiles, ships, people/aliens etc. were mentioned.

5.) there was almost no down time... from about 25% into this book, this tale was one long continuous space battle between the human/rebel alien fleet and the enemy alien ships. The problem was that I often had difficulty telling who was who, who was winning AND if someone won a battle then the losing side seemed to return 3 or 4 paragraphs later with new and better spaceships. It just went on and on and on.

5.) and finally, inane dialogues between people/aliens/computers; beings that were part of the hierarchy and chain of command. BUT having said that, there were a couple of conversations that made me laugh out loud... not sure if they were intended to be funny, or meant to be serious, but came across as incredibly stupid.

Conclusion:
So how to rate this...
a.) as a serious attempt to write a space novel that was terribly, terribly bad... or
b.) as a farce, space opera... that when looked at in that light, had some good moments.
Well, seeing no sign on the amazon product page that this was a humorous spoof, I'll opt for a poorly written Sci-Fi space novel.

Get the background and philosophy right before you study too hard

I've studied Spanish, German and Chinese in both school and immersion environments; in both classroom settings and one on one tutoring. I've also been an English teacher to ESL students in several countries. Some things I've learned: you have to make it a primarily goal, not a hobby. An hour or two a week is not enough, it should be daily. There are lots of ways to study, but you need to focus on what works best, on the learning the most used language content first. Traditional books and classroom settings are mostly outdated and you can drastically speed up learning time by "hacking" - or making use of technological shortcuts. Don't spend years studying a language and end up barely functional. Get this book, internalize the tips inside, commit to learning rapidly and using the language naturally. You won't regret it.

Compelling book by enthusiastic author

Benny Lewis is passionate about languages, and this book conveys that passion together with practical steps you can implement straightaway.

Benny's general approach makes sense (if you want to speak a language, focus on speaking the language, not, e.g., on grammar books). But it's not just a theory. His approach is grounded in his own experience - both in unsuccessful language learning at school using traditional methods and in successful language learning as an adult. While advocating a general approach, he's not doctrinaire, but instead acknowledges that different approaches and tactics could work for different people.

The whole book was compelling, including:
- dispelling all the reasons why you "can't" learn a language
- practical tips (e.g., word associations, modal verbs to help your conversation before you know all the verb forms, how to tell whether French words are likely to be masculine or feminine)
- different tactics to use at different stages of language learning and
- online and other types of resources.

By the end, I understood how I can progress in learning a foreign language (while also appreciating that there will be bumps along the road and that I'll need to change my tactics from time to time).

Highly recommended. The best book I have read on adult foreign language learning.

About the Author
Samuel Bowles heads the Behavioral Sciences Program at the Santa Fe Institute. He previously taught economics at Harvard University, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Siena. He is the author, most recently, of Microeconomics: Behavior, Institutions, and Evolution (2004), A Cooperative Species: Human Reciprocity and its Evolution (2011, with Herbert Gintis) and articles in Science, Nature, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Public Economics and other academic journals. He has also served as an economic advisor to presidential candidates Robert F. Kennedy and Jesse Jackson, and former South African President Nelson Mandela and has taught crash courses in economics to trade unionists, community activists and others.

Herbert Gintis holds faculty positions at the Santa Fe Institute and Central European University. He is the author of "Game Theory Evolving" (Princeton), coauthor of "A Cooperative Species: Human Reciprocity and Its Evolution" with Samuel Bowles (Princeton), and the coeditor of numerous books, including "Moral Sentiments and Material Interests", "Unequal Chances" (Princeton), and "Foundations of Human Sociality".

Some good ideas

Designing Team-Based Organizations is a book with a more exciting title than content... though, the book is pretty good. It's not written in a very engaging style. Also the authors seem to have some assumptions about how to design new organizations which seemed weird to me.

The book consists of three parts. The first part is an introduction to teams and to the book. The second part talks about designing new organizations and the third part covers some implementation concerns.

The first two chapters provide an introduction in the rest of the book (and are probably two of the more interesting chapters). The first chapter covers different models of thinking about organizations and also introduces the three step model for designing organizations (basically: research, design, implement). The second chapter covers different organizations, teams and starts exploring how team-based organizations look like.

The second part has chapters called "Step one, Step two" etc. This is what bothered me most about the book. It suggested that you just follow five steps in designing a new organization and then just implement it (which is just one chapter). I got the impression that the authors were ONLY researchers and have never actually worked in or with organizations (though, they say they did research in organizations). Anyways..

The first step is to identify the teams. The second to discuss interteam issues and find ways for teams to work together. Interestingly enough, the authors seemed to be of opinion that management needs to create this structure more than the teams need to... (do the authors also have a traditional mindset?) Step three clarifies roles of management and roles of teams. Step four focuses on integration with the rest of the organization and... Step five on managing performance. This chapter contains some interesting info on different HR systems and is certainly worth reading.

Part three are *other* chapters that clarify issues. The first clarifies the different skill needs for teams and how this can be reached. The next (ninth) chapter talks about the concept of *empowerment*. The authors are of the opinion that the word is misused and want to clarify what they mean by this word. Some of the chapter is pretty good. The next chapter talks about different IT support. Though important, I found this chapter boring. Then with 40 pages left in the book, the authors move to "the implementation" and talk about different ways of transitioning to team-based organizations and in the last chapter, summarize the challenges. Interestingly, the book ends with a couple pages for researchers on what they think are future areas for research.

I was excited about the book when I started, though I had trouble finishing it (a bad sign). The writing was fairly dry and hard to follow. Some chapters were excellent, some chapters were boring (different authors wrote different chapters?). I was annoyed by the assumptions of the authors about the three simple steps of organizational design. This didn't seem to be equal to my reality. The authors did point that out, but still insist to structure their work like that. Also, the authors warn about traditional assumptions and yet they seem to have lots of traditional assumptions also related to the roles of management compared to teams. Management is responsible for planning and designing the organizations, there was very little to suggest that the actual teams should be involved in the design...

Anyways, I did enjoy the book and learned some new things from it. I was going for four stars, but the last three chapters ruined it and I switched to three stars. This book is worth reading only if you are very interested in the subject. If you are looking for more general team books, then this is probably not the right book.

Opera Stories for Children

I bought this book for my 8-year-old granddaughter prior to taking her to a live HD broadcast from the Met of Die Walkure. It presented the stories in simplified form, though not always true to the Wagner version. For example, at the end of the book, Siegfried and Brunnhilde return the ring to the Rhine maidens and, it is implied, live happily ever after. She loved the book, and read it cover to cover. It was a good way for her to become familiar with the characters and the basics of the story.

Great synopsis of the story.

This provides a great short retelling of these old stories from which Wagner crafted his amazing operas. I could nor help but identify elements in these tales that Tolkein must have used in his Ring Trilogy. A great way, also, to introduce this to children.

Dirk awakens with no memory, but what is more distressing is the emptiness he feels inside. There is an ache inside of him, a longing, a yearning, a need and it’s due to the absence of his mate. He’s unclear of so many things, but knowing that he needs to get to her is the one thing he’s certain of.

Jane uses the skills that she’d learned over the years she’d spent working for Maximil to track him but she stumbles into an evil that she’d not even thought someone like Maximil was capable of. There are so many more lives on the line than she’d thought. She begins to wonder if it’s even possible for them to all make it out alive and at the back of her mind, she can’t help but think that even if she does succeed, she may end up with her heart broken in the end. Surely, her mate is going to be disgusted with her when he learns of the monstrous things she’s done.

LOVED IT

I'm Giving it a 5 star because I loved the book it was great and I loved the first one to except for the part were I had to continue reading on to the 2nd book but I am glad that there was a second book the only thing that bugs me with these books is the spelling errors and the use of the wrong word in a sentence but I am not the kind of person that rates books on that besides for that I LOVED LOVED LOVED the book

I was egar to read this sequal, & wasn't disappointed. I started it late last night, & am now finished. I already loved the characters in the first book, and enjoyed the unique take on werewolves. I'm looking forward to the third book, and whatever is else the author puts on the market.

Good intro to Apologetics

One of the best parts about Corduan's book, is that he starts out each chapter with commonly stated arguments against the topic he is about to discuss. He does this in "vignettes" (read - experiences) he has had meeting both believers and non-believers in his life and travels. The beginning vignettes set the stage for the rest of the chapter with cliff-hanger questions pertaining to the material about to be discussed. This helps one see how the presented material fits in to both the problem of apologetics while remaining utterly practical. He finishes each chapter by stating how he thinks one should best answer the question arising in the vignettes. This approach both aids in practical application and stimulates thought regarding more scholarly treatments of the topics.

As others have stated here, this is a good introductory text. Corduan does not go into great detail or explanation on foundational ideologies of apologetics such as defining truth and differeing philosophies such as relativism. He does treat them well enough for an introduction, though.

Personally, I find concrete evidences most convincing. I was expecting to find in chapters dealing directly with apologetics topics like the existence of God, or miracles, that there would be concrete evidences, such as the fine-tuned nature of the world, or the utter complexity of the world pointing to a Creator. After all, to me, 'No Doubt' normally results from concrete evidence. Instead, Corduan uses the Cosmological Argument, which to me, is foreign since I am not a philosopher (I was previously very familiar with the argument, but logic-based philosophical arguments do less for me than concrete evidence). What I am trying to convey is less than a critique and more of a notification that evidences in this book are more thought provoking than 'ammunition' to be used in debate with non-philosophers. He does a good job presenting the argument fairly succinctly.

Overall, this is a good thought-provoking book for apologetics introduction. It's writing brings up significant topics to mull over that apply practically and lay the foundation for apologetics education growth. I hope you enjoy!

A very good and concrete introduction to apologetics

This book is very suited as an introduction to apologetics, and for group study. Each chapter is preceeded by some conversations (called "vignettes") the author had with different persons on the subject of the chapter. At the end of the chapter, one finds some answers/reflexions about the vignettes of the chapter, as well as some questions to master the content of the chapter and for further reflexions, and also a short bibliography for further exploration.
I find most of the chapters very good, except the presentation of the cosmological and teleological arguments.

Fan Fiction gone awry!

I have a very complicated relationship with this series. When it first came out I was excited, a new series that portrayed Rei in a way that made her likable and would basically avoid where Angelic Days went wrong. So I began collecting volumes until around volume 7 when I realized that they were all basically the same. Shinji and friends get into some wacky adventures, something ecchi happens (OMG!) and then they call it a day. That was it. Frustrated, I stopped buying the volumes and waited patiently for a volume with an actual story, but eventually I forgot the series entirely until I happened to run across this one at work. After reading through it, I could not believe that it was the exact same formula as the other seven volumes! I can't possibly understand what readers are getting out of this! It's like fan fiction! That story hasn't developed, relationships are hinted at but never acted upon, and the embarrassing scenes are beyond tacky. It's almost as if the author doesn't care anymore, and keeps pumping out volumes for whatever money can be made. I understand why Takahashi is doing it, really I do! By keeping Shinji away from any concrete romantic relationship with either heroine, you avoid alienating half your audience, but fourteen volumes of the same stuff is beyond insulting to the reader. I even clicked on Volume 15, to see if there is any description of the plot planned, but nothing. I would laugh if it wasn't so sad. My advice? Stop buying until Takahashi starts to treat readers with the respect they deserve.

It's okay if you are a true fan...

Honestly it's well written and i am an avid Evangelion fan. I like this series because it is the alternate reality that was hinted at in the original tv series. I am disappointed that the story hasn't changed since book 8 or 9. There are new antics but i am getting bored with the books. This one had the same plot as books 8-13. Nothing has changed and the author Takahashi needs to make some moves regarding relationship development. The book is good but it is not as good as the earlier books. I hope in the future things get going. Only get this if you are an avid fan but otherwise wait until the story develops more before buying this.
